Choosing the right exterior paint color is an extremely important decision, one you will have to make if you are building your own home.

And these are the ideas HGTV designers culled from these bold and inspiring colorful homes.

Homeowners Justine and Shannon Egner say they live in every child’s dream home.

“If you ask a 6-year-old child what the perfect house would be like, it would be this house,” Justine said.

When they saw in 2020, this house in Viroqua, Wisconsin (USA) was painted rainbow colors and the couple seriously talked about whether to buy it or not.

“Living in a rainbow house is the epitome of ‘living life to the fullest and proudly,'” says Justine. And what gave them confidence was that people in the town received it positively.

“Once when she saw us, a woman taking pictures of the house exclaimed, ‘Sorry, I’m not following you. I just really love it,'” Shannon said.

“We don’t mind, because so do we,” they happily and proudly replied.

Homeowners Craig Winkler and Michelle Garnier Winkler loved the house for its location and architectural style. But from the moment they decided to buy a house, they knew something had to be done with the old, drab blue-gray exterior.

“It’s a sad place,” Michelle said. She contacted a consultant for guidance when repainting the house and chose this cheerful orange with yellow trim.

“Some neighbors love it, others tilt their heads and say, ‘Why did you paint the house that color?!’ But our family’s goals of happiness, creativity and joy have definitely come back.” come true here,” she said.

Mark Middlebrook regularly travels to Italy for work and when it’s time to repaint his house Oakland, California he knew what he wanted.

“I’ve always been drawn to the rusty red colors they use for Piedmont homes,” he says. However, he had to convince his wife, Amrita Daing, of this desire.

“She was afraid it would lose value with this unique color, but in the end the two found the right color. And she added her own touch.

Some decorative details such as door frames and steps are painted in a dark yellow called Curry.

“Amrita is from Calcutta so I feel like it was meant to be,” Mark said.

Michael and Debbie Horning have lived near this five-bedroom house for a decade and every time they pass by, Michael says, “If it was for sale I’d buy it.”

“We are attracted to color,” he explains. “It’s peaceful and serene but also really happy.”

A few years ago, my dream Michael has come true. The house was for sale and he and Debbie grabbed the opportunity.

The couple is currently expanding their house to have enough bedrooms for their five grandchildren. But don’t worry, the color of the outside of the house remains the same.

Black house

HGTV designer Tiffany Brooks transformed a basic suburban Illinois home into a stunning showpiece.

As a new start for a new journey, she bought the house right after the divorce was completed. With a very 1990s design, this place still needs some finishing touches.

“Not following a trendy style, but as soon as I saw the black and white checkerboard tile floor on the first floor, I thought: ‘This is me!’.

I repainted the outside before moving in. The traditional bones of the house inspired me to add white lines and stay true to my bold, modern style,” she says.

Green house

“People in town call it the Green Hulk,” said the owners of the three-bedroom house built in 2011, DT North and his wife Kimberley.

The couple’s designer suggested painting the house’s walls green and it was immediately agreed.

“It feels bright and welcoming during the long, gray winters here in the Pacific Northwest.”

But color is not the only special feature. This is also one of the first certified passive houses – super energy efficient in Washington state.

“Our house is superior in every way,” DT says.

The home is located in a new community near beautiful Tims Ford Lake built in 2023.

“Goes with everything,” design expert Trixie Motel considers pale pink as a neutral color. “Like a warming cream,” she says.

Pink is easily combined with white or other neutral colors. Also works well with green. “It makes your yard look vibrant.”

A pink house is a brave choice. “It lets people know who you are before entering the house.”

Passersby will love it and want to stop and take photos. “Pink is magic,” she said.

Yellow house

Beaches, tropical lands full of rain and sunshine can be a great source of inspiration to determine the color theme for the house. For example, the sunny yellow color for this beachfront home.

Without causing a bright feeling, the modern house painted yellow looks warm on the beach. Under the sunlight, the cheerful yellow color of the house seems to be enhanced by the brown color of the main door.

Pure white accents on the windows contribute to a crisp and clean feel.

And this is the perfect result for this bold decision.
