6. Pom Poko

One of Studio Ghibli’s most overlooked works, Pom Poko released in 1994 directed by Isao Takahata. The film tells about a family Tanuki lives in a forest just outside Tokyo. As Tokyo began to expand, this forest became a target for planners who wanted to turn it into housing.

To protect your family, Tanuki used all of their magical powers, including the ability to change shape, to try to drive away the land miners – but they soon realized that holding back the forest would not be easy. The film’s title comes from a 1919 poem by Ujō Noguchi.

7. Whisper of the Heart

Whisper of the Heart tells the story of Shizuku Tsukishima, a young girl who loves to write. While looking through the books in her library, she noticed that they had all been read by Seiji Amasawa before. Wishing to find someone with the same interests as her, Shizuku vows to find this person. One day, after following a cat, Shizuku finds herself in an antique shop. She soon learns that the young man working there is the Seiji Amasawa she is looking for.

Shizuku and Seiji quickly bond over their shared ideals, embarking on an adventure that will change their lives and force them both to consider what they want from life and love. The film was released in 1995 and is based on the manga by Aoi Hiiragi.

8. My Neighbors the Yamadas (The Yamada family)

My Neighbors the Yamadas released in 1999 tells the story of the titular Yamada family: father Takashi, mother Matsuko, eldest son Noboru, youngest daughter Nonoko and the family dog ​​Pochi.
