In recent days, activities to celebrate the third Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day have taken place enthusiastically across the country.

Understanding the importance of reading culture to social life, the Department of Publishing, Printing and Circulation organizes Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day towards the important goal of affirming its position, role and importance. The importance of books for improving knowledge, skills, developing thinking, educating and training human personality.

To build a learning society, it is necessary to focus on encouraging and developing the reading movement in the community, creating a favorable reading environment, and forming reading habits in families, schools, agencies, and organizations. position.

In addition, Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day not only honors readers, writers, and people working in the fields of publishing, printing, and distribution, but also aims to enhance the responsibility of all levels and sectors, authorities and social organizations for building and developing the reading culture of Vietnamese people.

Sharing with Labor reporters, Mr. Nguyen Nguyen – Director of the Department of Publishing, Printing and Distribution – emphasized: “When talking about books, we must talk about the value that books bring. Today, the publishing industry needs to change, not only to bring books to readers but also to meet readers’ needs. Vietnamese publishing has developed very quickly, but copyright infringement is still a painful problem. We want, first of all, a change in perception from readers. Readers look for good books, real books also support the development of books and reading culture.”

In recent years, Vietnam has been among the top Southeast Asian countries in terms of number of publications. Every year, our country consumes about 500-600 million copies of books. In 5 years, the number of publishers converting digitally and releasing e-books has increased from 2 to 27 units.

In his opening speech at Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day on April 17, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung affirmed that reviving reading culture is also reviving the roots of a nation, promoting literature. Literacy is the creation of endogenous strength, resources and motivation for national development. Each person who creates the habit of reading books will contribute to revitalizing the culture of the whole country.

Spread the message about books

Reading culture is simply each person’s attitude towards books. That is love of books, preserving books, having reading habits and skills, reading healthily, enthusiastically seeking knowledge, appreciating knowledge, and self-development.

During his lifetime, President Ho Chi Minh advised all social classes to read books: “No matter what job you do, you need to read. People who are just learning to read need to read to avoid going blind, and police officers need to read to understand the situation. People who do professional work need to read to improve their skills. Managers and leaders need to read to manage and lead better. As a journalist, a writer must read even more.”

Responding to Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day 2024, hundreds of people visited the book fair at Ho Van (Temple of Literature – Quoc Tu Giam) to choose useful books for themselves. Among them, many young couples have begun to develop the habit of reading books for their children from a young age.

Ms. My Hanh (48 years old, Dong Da, Hanoi) shared: “I created the habit of reading books for my children from a young age. My two children also love books and read regularly. For me, books always play an important role in human development, providing knowledge, reducing stress, and helping me find joy in life.”

Above all the movements launched, reading is a habit formed by influences in the family and school environment.
