Tuyet Thanh’s life had ups and downs, but she always looked towards the positive. The artist got married at the age of 27, but broke up after 5 years of marriage. At that time, her daughter was only four years old. Before that, Tuyet Thanh listened to her father’s advice and tried to consider it, but seeing that she could not maintain it any longer, she asked him for permission to divorce. The artist always remembers his father’s words: “The mirror is cracked, I try to mend it. If it doesn’t work, break it and buy a new mirror.” Tuyet Thanh said her love story ended without a mirror. The sound of arguing and blaming was probably because the two people had fallen out of love.

After the incident, she collapsed for two years, only weighing 36 kg. Encouraged by some of her brothers at the Artists Association, Tuyet Thanh performed again, starting from far away provinces to near. The artist gradually calmed down and regained joy through work. In 1993, she retired from the Voice of Vietnam Radio Station, which was also when her daughter got married. Tuyet Thanh always remembers the day she saw her child go. For more than 30 years, she has faced vestibular disease, saying the cost of medicine is more than the cost of food and living expenses. At the age of 82, she spends about two million dong buying medicine every month. Because of her old age, she moved from Trung Tu Street to Thai Thinh to live near relatives in 2017 to make it easier when she is sick. However, all of Tuyet Thanh’s activities mainly take place alone. Speaking of this, she felt a little sad but still told herself: “If I’m sick, I have to take care of myself, who can take care of me?”

Tuyet Thanh turns on the TV a lot every time she is at home, just to hear people’s voices. In her old age, she remembers a lot about the years she brought singing to a large number of people through the Voice of Vietnam Radio. During the period 1965-1990, Tuyet Thanh was a typical vocalist of revolutionary music, with clear timbre and high ranges. She sang many times to serve during the last period of President Ho Chi Minh’s life.

Tuyet Thanh cannot recount all her memories of the time when “singing drowned out the sound of bombs”, but she vividly remembers the first time she sang new compositions on the radio. Song of Hanoi is one of her pride. In 1967, when the US military was fiercely bombarding the capital, artists often had to stay at the station’s studio to ensure uninterrupted transmission. One afternoon, while with her colleagues in the shelter, Tuyet Thanh heard everyone cheering. Opening the hatch cover, she witnessed the sight of an American plane on fire. At that time, musician Vu Thanh was also present and immediately wrote lyrics for him Song of Hanoi. The song was completed, Tuyet Thanh was the first to perform.
