In general, being my mother’s child for 19 years now, I’m getting used to it. Occasionally, when I read some negative articles and comments about me, I feel a bit sad and heartbroken.

I’m young and have a strong personality, so I like to experiment with many styles. They commented on my appearance and my family, saying ‘like mother, like daughter’, very negative! I don’t understand how people can say that.

From childhood until now, every class I’ve been in has been discovered as ‘Chicken Phuong Thanh’ and rumors spread throughout the school, there’s no way to hide it. I don’t post about my mother, sometimes I take pictures and hide them behind her back to post stories (the feature of sharing moments and short news on personal Facebook – PV), but my friends still watch and see how good it is.

In grade 2 and 3, I was quite comfortable, no matter what people said, I felt happy. But when I went to college, I didn’t share anything about my family because this environment was too large, and if I couldn’t control it, it would affect me.

– Singer Phuong Thanh is very ‘fierce’ in her career, what is it like being a mother at home?

My mother is very funny, often joking and teasing her children, especially about love affairs. Sometimes, I joke around and ask my mother how her love life is going. Mother and daughter are as comfortable as two friends.

I can freely talk about love and affairs with my mother! I don’t know about other parents, but perhaps it’s a bit rare to see mothers who let their children live comfortably and freely develop in the direction they like.

Sometimes my mother is also uncomfortable and hot-tempered. My temper is just like my mother’s, so at times like that, the two of us will be silent for a while. After that, my mother was the one who came to console me because she knew that girls were ‘fragile’ and could not bear harsh words.

Actually, I don’t always wait for my mother to comfort me. When I’m wrong, like going out late at night, for example, I have to go comfort my mother. My mother was grumpy and irritable, but her daughter said a few words and she calmed down and talked right back.

No matter how hot the mother is, she just says that she will never hit me. Seriously, if my mother hits me, I’ll really go to hell. (laugh)

– Have you ever blamed your mother for worrying about work and not being close to her children?

From childhood to adulthood, my mother almost never left me alone for too long or felt distant. If so, at the end of my 12th grade year, my mother went to sing on a separate island.

At that time, I graduated from high school and was in the last days of my student life, so I was a bit sensitive. I saw that my friends had their parents with them while I was alone, so I felt a bit sad.

When my mother returned, I resisted and even spoke a bit harshly. Mom is very sad. I know I said too much but I couldn’t hold back my emotions. Other times, my mother still asked her friends, assistants… to come with me, but that time she was a bit busy singing on the island.

– What about a memorable memory between mother and child?

Around 10th grade, I couldn’t find my things. When I asked, I found out my mother had thrown them away, so I got angry. Being rude, my mother and I argued so loudly that we ran away from home, actually going to my uncle’s house. I was angry so I blocked Facebook and stopped texting and contacting my mother.

During that week, relatives also advised me this and that, but I just said: “Mom and I haven’t resolved it yet.” At that time, it was almost Tet. Some musicians told me that their mother said: “I love the Chicken because I already have lucky money for everyone. Having a Chicken is not enough.”

My eyes suddenly filled with tears and I moved home that day. Seeing me, my mother looked so guilty, I just rushed in and whined. Even now, I still remember the look on my mother’s face that day.

Now I see myself very differently. I am very soft with my mother. I endure everything and proactively comfort her. Sometimes, I even feel like I’m the adult and my mother is the baby in the house.

– How is life at home for mother and daughter?

My family has 2 mother and daughter, uncle and grandmother. To this day, I still sleep with that mother. While I still have my mother and the time we have together, I want to just enjoy it.

– What about studying at school?

From childhood to adulthood, my mother did not put pressure on her children. Sometimes I felt inadequate because I had never experienced the feeling of being forced to study.

Therefore, I put pressure on myself, like ‘as Phuong Thanh’s daughter, I must at least study well’. From elementary school to high school, there was never a year when I was not a good student.

When I went to college, the program was very heavy and stressful, but I still went to school happily and could joke and laugh all day. When I first entered school, I studied both Vietnamese and English. Currently, the entire program is in English so it is quite tiring, especially the specialized academic part.

– Tuition fees at RMIT University in Ho Chi Minh City are very heavy, do you and your mother have any concerns?

During the past 19 years, I have studied from public to private schools. In high school, I wanted to study at an international school but knew my family’s conditions at that time were not guaranteed, especially in the context of the Covid-19 epidemic. So I told my mom and left it at that.

In my senior year, I saw that my family’s conditions had improved a bit so I shared it again. My mother supported me, saying I was suitable for an international environment. Just like that, I found a school, filled out the application, and took the exam.

– At age 19, what is your career orientation?

Even though I’m majoring in Communications, I like business. I tried a few small projects, the results were also positive. I prepared quite a clear plan and direction but was afraid to share it because I was afraid of ‘talking ahead and not passing through’.
