Nearly 1,000 overseas Vietnamese students have not been able to enroll yet

According to statistics of the Department of Education and Training (GDDT) of An Phu district (An Phu – An Giang), in the 2022-2023 school year, there are more than 700 Vietnamese talented students living across the border, unable to enroll. Specifically, as of September 23, there were only 350 overseas Vietnamese students enrolled in primary and secondary schools along the border in the district, such as Khanh An commune, Khanh Binh commune and Long Binh town.

Compared to the number of overseas Vietnamese students who went to school before the time of the COVID-19 epidemic, which was 1,070, there are still over 700 students who have not yet enrolled.

The main reason is that the wharf crossing the Binh Di River, the natural boundary between the two countries, has not been allowed to reopen. Therefore, many families cannot bring and pick up their children and children to study every day like before the epidemic happened.

Out of 352 overseas Vietnamese students enrolled, parents have to rent a house near the school, or send it to a relative’s house so that their children can go to school.

However, it can be estimated that the total number of students who have not been able to enroll is about 1,000. This data is based on the evolution of the number of overseas Vietnamese students enrolled many years ago, plus information that school leaders have obtained from Vietnamese parents across the border.

Previously, every year, about 100 children living along the border opposite An Phu district entered grade 1. However, in the past 2 years, due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, they could not enter school. Currently, the locality and functional sectors are promoting the proposal to the competent authorities to consider and resolve.
