On September 23, the Department of Health of Dong Nai province sent a document to the People’s Committees of districts and cities to request a review and statistics on the number of children in the area aged from 6 months to under 5 years old. Thereby proposing the need for vaccination against Covid-19 for this group of subjects.

Previously, on September 22, the Ministry of Health sent an urgent dispatch to the People’s Committees of provinces and cities on this issue.

In order to prepare a plan to expand the population of children vaccinated against Covid-19 in Vietnam, the Ministry of Health asked the People’s Committees of provinces and cities to direct relevant units to review and make statistics on the number of children from different age groups. 6 months to under 5 years old in the area and propose the need to use vaccines for this group of subjects.

To date, the country has vaccinated more than 259 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine for people aged 5 years and older.

Also related to the vaccination against Covid-19, by the end of September 21, the whole province of Dong Nai had more than 256.2 thousand children from 5 to under 12 years old who had received the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine, reaching rate of 80.1%. However, just over 151.2 thousand children received the second dose, reaching 47.3%. Many of these children have received the 1st dose of Moderna vaccine and are waiting for the Moderna vaccine to receive the 2nd dose.

According to a representative of the Dong Nai Department of Health, up to now, the Ministry of Health has not issued Moderna vaccine to give the 2nd dose to children aged 6 to under 12 years who have received the 1st dose of this vaccine in the province. That has affected the province’s Covid-19 vaccination rate in this target group.

Because according to the guidance of the Ministry of Health, children from 5 to under 12 years old will receive the basic dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine (for children 6 years and older). Children who have received the 1st dose of any vaccine will receive the 2nd dose of that vaccine.

Before that, the Ministry of Health had issued Moderna vaccine for Dong Nai to deploy the 1st and 2nd injections for children of this age. However, at that time, many families did not take their children to get the 2nd injection on schedule because the child was sick or had Covid-19 and had to postpone the injection. While Moderna vaccine can only be used within 30 days from the date of defrosting. To avoid wasting vaccines, the province has used these vaccines to inject adults.

Not only is there a shortage of Moderna vaccine, so far the province has only 100 doses of Pfizer vaccine to inject children from 5 to under 12 years old.
