--

On the morning of April 24, the Department of Transport of Nghe An province said that it had sent a written report to the People’s Committee of Nghe An province about the collapse of the Ke Ninh suspension bridge (Chau Hanh commune, Quy Chau district, Nghe An).

Ke Ninh suspension bridge collapsed, killing a buffalo.

Previously, at noon on March 6, the Ke Ninh suspension bridge over the Hieu River, connecting the two villages of Ke Ninh and Dinh Tien (Chau Hanh commune) suddenly collapsed. Fortunately, when the suspension bridge collapsed, there were no people or motorbikes passing through the bridge. The collapse of the suspension bridge caused a local buffalo that was grazing on the mudflats on the riverbank to die on the spot.

The Ke Ninh suspension bridge project was invested and built to replace the Ke Ninh ferry wharf. Construction on the bridge began in 2013 and was completed and put into use in 2014.

By 2022, due to the impact of rain and floods, the right slope of abutment M2 (on the left bank of Hieu River) with a volume of over 1,000 m3, broke the anchor bar protection box, cracked, fractured and subsided a bit. The concrete pavement at the beginning of the M2 abutment bridge and the M2 abutment cable anchor bar on the downstream side are tilted.

At that time, the District People’s Committee banned the road, placed warning and announcement signs, sent guards to prohibit people and vehicles from circulating on the bridge, and reported the incident to superiors.

In October 2022, Nghe An Department of Transport inspected the damaged status of Ke Ninh suspension bridge and recommended closing both ends to prevent people and vehicles from crossing the bridge to ensure people’s safety.

On September 22, 2023, Nghe An Provincial People’s Committee agreed to support funding for Quy Chau district to repair Ke Ninh suspension bridge.

After the District People’s Committee approved the investment policy to repair the Ke Ninh suspension bridge and while waiting for funding, the bridge collapse occurred.

The Ke Ninh suspension bridge project was degraded and damaged a few years ago, but was slowly repaired and then collapsed.

According to the Department of Transport of Nghe An province, the cause of the bridge collapse was: “Due to the subsidence of the road foundation under the anchor bar, the anchor bar downstream of the M2 anchor abutment was displaced, collapsed, causing the main cable to collapse.” pulled the top of the tower downstream of abutment M2 to shift horizontally, causing instability of the tower, collapsing the entire suspension span of the Ke Ninh suspension bridge.

At the scene, it was shown that all structures, including steel bridge gate pillars, suspension cables, and suspension span structures, had completely collapsed into the river bed. The two leading spans on both sides and the reinforced concrete body of the gate pillar are remaining in place.

Ke Ninh suspension bridge collapsed into the river.

The foundation and road surface at the beginning of the M2 abutment span (Ke Ninh village side) have subsided. The area of foundation and road surface about 40m long from behind the tail of M2 abutment towards the anchor abutment collapsed almost completely, sliding horizontally to the foot of the slope downstream of the river. The anchor bar complex downstream of the M2 anchor abutment was broken and collapsed along the ground below, the anchor bar complex upstream is in the same position. The cable anchor protection boxes and brick anchor bars were completely collapsed.

The foundation items, road surface and anchor abutments on the M1 approach span abutment (on the side of National Highway 48) are basically kept intact, undamaged. The cable anchor protection boxes with masonry anchor bars were broken at the top due to the main cable being thrown around.

After the Ke Ninh suspension bridge collapsed, the police also collected documents and investigated the incident.

On April 12, Nghe An Provincial People’s Committee issued a document assigning Nghe An Department of Transport to preside and coordinate with relevant parties to guide Quy Chau District People’s Committee to properly implement current processes and procedures before carrying out cleanup. scene.
