Highway 1 is not congested after traffic separation

Regarding traffic flow on Cam Lo – La Son Expressway, recently, the Vietnam Road Administration (DBVN) had a working session with leaders of Thua Thien Hue and Quang Tri provinces.

According to the Vietnam Road Bureau, the divergent expressway belongs to the Cam Lo – La Son project, the section through Thua Thien Hue is about 60km long.

Since being put into operation in 2022, the Cam Lo – La Son Expressway section through Thua Thien Hue has had 35 traffic accidents, killing 7 people and injuring 25 people. The main cause is due to speeding, reckless overtaking, lack of observation, and not keeping a safe distance according to the instructions of the road signaling system on the route.

Since the separation of lanes prohibiting trucks on 6 axles, cars with over 30 seats, and sleeper buses on the Cam Lo – La Son expressway (from April 4), the number of vehicles on National Highway 1 has increased but the traffic is basically Convenient traffic, no congestion. Highways are clear, reducing reckless overtaking and ensuring traffic safety.

The Vietnam Road Bureau said that investing in complete 4 lanes on the Cam Lo – La Son highway is a long-term solution that needs to be implemented.

Ensuring safety for both highways and National Highway 1

After listening to the report from the Vietnam Road Bureau, Mr. Le Truong Luu, Secretary of the Thua Thien Hue Provincial Party Committee, said that this province acknowledged the active participation of the Vietnam Road Traffic Department on solutions to ensure traffic safety on the Cam Lo – La Expressway. Mr. Luu assessed that since the expressway was put into operation, it has contributed to local socio-economic development and ensured traffic safety in the area. However, in the context of divergent investment, the project has encountered some exploitation problems, so organizing solutions to further improve traffic safety on the route is necessary.

However, Mr. Luu also proposed strengthening solutions to ensure traffic safety for the entire National Highway 1.

Speaking at the meeting with the Vietnam Road Bureau, Mr. Ha Sy Dong, Permanent Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Quang Tri province, said that the province agrees in classifying the Cam Lo – La Son expressway but needs to take into account the practical basis. to continue to review and handle arising problems and ensure traffic safety.

Mr. Dong also agreed that the most optimal solution is to soon invest in the Cam Lo – La Son expressway to have 4 lanes.

“Quang Tri commits to closely coordinate on site clearance work, if any. The Quang Tri National Assembly Delegation has commented with the Government and National Assembly to support this policy of the transportation industry in early prioritizing resources. Investing in the Cam Lo – La Son expressway to 4 lanes,” Mr. Dong said.

Talking about the traffic separation on Cam Lo – La Son Expressway from April 4, Director of Vietnam Road Traffic Department Nguyen Xuan Cuong said that this is the final solution, carefully and carefully calculated by the Department on a scientific basis. Based on the practical context and authority to organize traffic on both national highways and Cam Lo – La Son expressway.

At the same time, the Department set up interdisciplinary delegations and consulted with functional agencies and localities to agree on a channelization plan.

Vehicle counting results at 2 locations on National Highway 1 (Dong Ha Toll Station (Quang Tri), Phu Bai Toll Station (Hue) and on the highway show that the number of vehicles passing through Cam Lo – La Son Expressway reached average The average capacity is nearly 10,000 PCU (converted vehicles/day and night), reaching the full load threshold for a 2-lane road without a median strip.

Meanwhile, National Highway 1 still lacks 6,000 PCUs to reach the full load threshold. The traffic separation has ensured harmony and does not cause traffic congestion between National Highway 1 and the expressway.

Regarding the issue of the Hue city bypass with lots of traffic but the highway is empty, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Cuong analyzed that the phenomenon of “no traffic” on the highway after traffic separation is actually due to the rapid exit of vehicles, no longer a problem. Local congestion makes the road feel deserted.

“In the context of highway investment divergence, the above vehicle regulation is considered the optimal and most effective solution. With the characteristics of 2-lane highways, this solution is also difficult to avoid arising problems, so We really need the sharing of localities and people on the route…”, Mr. Cuong shared and affirmed that investing in a complete expressway is still a fundamental solution.

Forecasting a high increase in vehicle traffic on the Cam Lo – La Son highway during the peak holiday period of April 30-May 1, the Ho Chi Minh Road Project Management Board has implemented the construction of 2 temporary rest stops. on the route at km64 and km77; strive to complete before April 30.
