Vam Co Dong River receives 7 million cubic meters of water from Dau Tieng Lake to combat saline drought

On April 24, Mr. Pham Thanh Truyen, Director of Long An Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that after the proposal of Long An province, Southern Irrigation Exploitation Company Limited decided to discharge 7.1 million m3 Fresh water from Dau Tieng lake flows into Vam Co Dong river to create a source of salinity and maintain freshness. This water source will significantly reduce damage caused by salinity drought in Duc Hoa and Duc Hue districts.

Most of the canals and inland canals in Long An have dried up

Water will be released from April 23 – 28. After dissolving together, the salinity on the Vam Co Dong River at Xuan Khanh station (Duc Hoa District, Long An) does not exceed 0.2%. After this water discharge, depending on the tide situation and saltwater intrusion on the Vam Co Dong River, the Dau Tieng Lake management unit will adjust the discharge plan and make an announcement later.

However, the management unit of Dau Tieng lake also recommends that Long An province needs to strengthen the organization of taking fresh water from other sources to store water in the field. People need to follow the government’s recommendations while taking water into the fields to serve this year’s summer-autumn crop.

Previously, due to the severe natural disaster of saltwater intrusion, Long An Department of Agriculture and Rural Development requested the management unit of Dau Tieng Lake to balance water sources and increase water discharge to Vam Co Dong River to repel salinity and ensure pumping stations. Due to the impact of drought and salinity natural disasters, tens of thousands of households in Tan Tru, Can Giuoc, Thanh Hoa, Can Duoc… districts are currently lacking fresh water. Meanwhile, the water level on the canals and infield ditches of Long An province has dropped very low; 4‰ salinity has penetrated more than 100 km from Soai Rap river mouth.
