On April 23, information from the Nghe An Department of Transport said that the Department had reported to the Provincial People’s Committee about the collapse of the Ke Ninh suspension bridge in Chau Hanh commune, Quy Chau district.

According to the report, field inspection showed that all structures, including steel bridge gate pillars, suspension cables, and suspension span structures, completely collapsed into the river bed. The two leading spans on both sides and the reinforced concrete body of the gate pillar are remaining in place.

The foundation and road surface at the beginning of the M2 abutment span (Ke Ninh village side) have subsided. The area of ​​the foundation and road surface about 40m long from behind the tail of the M2 abutment towards the anchor abutment collapsed almost completely, sliding horizontally to the foot of the downstream slope. The anchor bar complex downstream of the M2 anchor abutment was broken and collapsed along the ground below, the anchor bar complex upstream is in the same position. The cable anchor protection boxes and brick anchor bars were completely collapsed.

The foundation items, road surface and anchor abutments on the M1 approach span abutment (on the side of National Highway 48) are basically kept intact, undamaged. The cable anchor protection boxes with masonry anchor bars were broken at the top due to the main cable being thrown around.

Regarding the cause of the bridge collapse, the report of the Nghe An Department of Transport stated: “Due to the subsidence of the road foundation at the bridgehead under the anchor bar, the anchor bar downstream of the M2 anchor abutment was displaced, collapsed, causing The main cable pulling the top of the tower downstream of the M2 abutment shifts horizontally, causing instability of the tower, collapsing the entire suspension span of the bridge.

Regarding the dismantling and cleaning up of the scene, on April 12, the People’s Committee of Nghe An province issued a document assigning the Department of Transport to preside and coordinate with relevant parties to guide the People’s Committee of Quy Chau district to properly implement the regulations. current processes and procedures before implementation.

Ke Ninh suspension bridge was started construction in 2013 and completed and put into use in 2014, invested and managed by the People’s Committee of Quy Chau district. The bridge spans the Hieu River, serving the travel needs of people in Dinh Tien and Ke Ninh villages in Chau Hanh commune.

The bridge is designed as a suspension bridge with a 2.4m wide concrete slab; global length 237m. During use, major floods that occurred in September 2022 and September 2023 caused serious damage to the project (severe landslides of the ground surface and road surface behind the M2 abutment, causing displacement of the cable anchor bar). owner downstream of abutment M2).

In October 2023, the People’s Committee of Nghe An province issued a document granting a budget of 2 billion VND to repair the Ke Ninh suspension bridge.
