At around 11:00 a.m. on April 24, some people passing through the N2 canal near Truong Son bridge, on National Highway 48E, Son Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district, Nghe An saw a pair of sandals, a bracelet and a piece of paper.

The content of the note said “I apologize to my parents for the pressure to study”.

Suspecting that a student was doing something foolish, people immediately reported it to the local authorities.

Upon receiving the news, Son Thanh commune authorities mobilized the police force, militia and self-defense force, Youth Union and people to go down to the canal to find people.

For nearly three hours, the rescue team searched every meter of the canal bank but to no avail.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Sau – Chairman of Son Thanh Commune People’s Committee – denied that the student committed suicide and said that while everyone was trying to search, a student came and said: “You don’t have to search, someone is joking.”

Later, Son Thanh Commune Police verified that this was a joke by a group of three male students at Tran Can Primary School (Son Thanh Commune). They claimed that they followed it because they saw it on social networks.

“The commune police reminded the children not to repeat useless jokes, and at the same time advised parents to manage their children more closely. Currently, the three children have been handed over to their families by the commune police,” Mr. Sau said.

In February 2023, a group of students also created a fake scene, leaving a pair of sandals and a letter “I’m sorry, parents” at Cho Cau bridge, Hung Nguyen district, Nghe An, causing hundreds of people to search.
