Photographic artist Trieu Dai, who recorded the history of the Dien Bien Phu campaign with photos.

In 1953, after the political military adjustment, photographer Trieu Dai was mobilized by the Ministry of National Defense and General Commander Vo Nguyen Giap to participate in the Dien Bien Phu campaign. Accepting this important task, he quickly set out. The photographer’s fight on the battlefield of Dien Bien Phu took place excitingly and hotly.

He recorded all the images of the battlefield preparation work at the Dien Bien Phu front in detail and vividly, such as: Opening the road to victory, Engineers making artillery bunkers, Front dispatchers, Soldiers pulling artillery…

When the Dien Bien Phu campaign opened, he captured our howitzer in the bunker and fired the first shot, opening the campaign. He was assigned to the first squad (the main attack unit that always took the lead in battles on the Dien Bien Phu battlefield).

Panorama of Him Lam victory. This is a rare photo seen during the war in our country and countries around the world in the 50s of the last century.

A general commanding the Dien Bien Phu campaign wrote a handwritten letter to the combat units with the content: “Introducing comrade Trieu Dai to go with the first team to take photos of the campaign, the units need to protect comrades.” Trieu Dai is safe in normal times as well as in battle.” And Trieu Dai followed the front charges and rushed into the battlefield to capture all the images of the 1954 Dien Bien Phu campaign.

He recorded the touching and realistic images of our army and people during the Dien Bien Phu campaign very meticulously and truthfully.

He recorded the touching and realistic images of our army and people during the Dien Bien Phu campaign very meticulously, without missing any historical moment from the opening of the campaign to the war celebration. win. Thousands of Dien Bien Phu campaign photos by photographer Trieu Dai are invaluable photographic chronicles for the nation’s history and for future generations.

From the first photo he took of the “Determining Victory” flag of our soldiers flying high on Him Lam hill, to the last photo – the flag. Decide to win Decide to win on the roof of the Do – Cat tunnel The historic summer afternoon of May 7, 1954 was full of pride and pride. is a journey full of difficulties and hardships for the photographer on the battlefield, as well as the boundless sacrifices of countless officers, soldiers, and people in this tragic war.

The photo has the power to shake and inspire, becoming a symbol of the Dien Bien Phu victory that “resounded across five continents and shook the earth”.

General De Castries and the base group commanders when captured.

Photographic artist Chu Chi Thanh (Ho Chi Minh Prize and State Prize for Photography) shared: “We, from the perspective of photography, would like to talk about creative ideas, documentation, and history.” and the pride of the soldiers raising the Quyet Chien Quyet Thang flag in Trieu Dai’s photos at the Dien Bien Phu front.

When we arrange those photos next to each other, interesting ideas will emerge. What mission and what power does that Determination to Win flag have in the competition to kill the enemy and achieve success? And photographer Trieu Dai is not afraid to sacrifice, always following closely to capture that glorious flag every time it appears. From the first photo: General Commander-in-Chief Vo Nguyen Giap giving the Decisive Battle and Decide Victory flag to the Pioneer Army before going into battle, to the photo of our troops waving the flag on Him Lam hill, to the last photo of our troops We raise the flag on the roof of De Casteris tunnel.

The panoramic photo of the Him Lam victory was taken directly, spliced together with two horizontal scanning films. Cameras that year were still rudimentary, unable to capture panoramas in one shot. Pressing the camera twice captured the entire battlefield area, stitched together without deviation… that was the creativity of a talented photographer who was very good at technique, but was lucky enough to capture a unique moment.

The photo of Platoon Commander La Van Thinh (assault unit of the Capital Regiment) proudly waving high the flag of “Determining Victory” on the roof of General De-Cat’s bunker became the symbol of the “resounding” Dien Bien Phu campaign in 1999. “Earth-shaking continent”

Thanks to that, today we can clearly see with our own eyes a wide space of battlefields and long, closely packed mountains and hills, including soldiers waving flags, soldiers campaigning in trenches, and French soldiers’ corpses lying beside them. The side of the blockhouse is hidden under many clouds of smoke. This is a tragic epic about war, any viewer of the photo will be left speechless, or emotionally shaken by the brutality of war. This is a rare photo seen during the war in our country and countries around the world in the 50s of the last century.

The next photo was published in Vietnam Image Newspaper No. 02, December 1954. The photo shows that the Muong Thanh bridge area is still littered with white umbrellas from the French army covering the foot of the bridge. Our soldiers are training from the foot of the bridge to the road, crossing the bridge to attack the center.

The photographer promptly recorded this scene, right when the flag was just reaching the beginning of the bridge. This photo was taken before the photo of soldiers crossing the Muong Thanh bridge, it is in a series of photos in the Muong Thanh bridge area by Trieu Dai (This photo was also printed in Vietnam Image newspaper 1954).

Perhaps we and the author either have not collected enough, or have not fully appreciated the great value of Trieu Dai’s war photography career, including the rich and rare photographic epic about Dien Bien Phu. In fact, Trieu Dai Du’s priceless treasure trove of anti-foreign invasion photos stands in the Ho Chi Minh Prize and is on par with any great war photographer in the world of his time.
