On the world market, Brazil’s offered black pepper price increased by 37.6% in the first quarter of the year, while Indonesia and Vietnam increased by 13% and nearly 8%, respectively.

Similarly, the price of black pepper in Vietnam’s domestic market in the first quarter also increased by 16 – 18.6% to 92,500 – 96,000 VND/kg, the highest level in the past 7 years. Then the price was adjusted down to 89,000 – 92,000 VND/kg in the first half of April, but still about 40% higher than the same period last year.

The Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) forecasts that this year’s output is expected to decrease by 10% to about 170,000 tons compared to last year, the lowest level in the last 5 years.

Meanwhile, severe drought, especially in key pepper production areas in the Central Highlands region, may affect the upcoming crop.

According to the latest report from Nedspice Group, the pepper harvest in Vietnam is about to end with total output expected to decrease by 15% compared to last year.

While the global El Niño phenomenon is expected to pass soon, Vietnam’s Central Highlands region has been suffering from drought in recent months. This is likely to affect the 2025 crop output.

In addition, Nedspice also lowered Brazil’s pepper production forecast for 2024 to 85,000 – 90,000 tons compared to last year’s figure of 110,000 tons. Mainly due to harsh weather, drought caused by El Niño in pepper growing areas in the states of Espírito Santo and Bahia negatively impacts the harvest that will take place from April to June.

According to forecasts of Mane Kancor Spice Company, pepper output in Vietnam this year is expected to be about 157,000 tons this year. Of these, 80% of the harvest has ended and the rest is expected to be completed by mid-April. The area for new pepper planting is very small while current plantations are old and need additional care.

Pepper output in Vietnam may not increase rapidly because farmers choose other alternative crops. The supply-demand gap is expected to widen in the coming years. Farmers are lacking interest in pepper farms because of years of low prices, which has affected crop yields.

In Indonesia, the country’s output is expected to be 33,000 tons, an increase of about 10% compared to last year’s crop, but overall still lower than that of the 2013-2022 period.

However, pepper production in India and Sri Lanka is forecast to be relatively good in 2024.
