Moving to a centrally run city, Hue city was split in two, the name Thua Thien Hue was officially ‘obliterated’

In early 2024, the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province issued Plan No. 40/KH-UBND with the Summary of “Centrally-run City Project and arrangement and establishment of district-level administrative units, commune level based on the administrative boundaries of Thua Thien Hue province”.

Accordingly, Hue city, once a centrally run city, had a natural area of ​​4,947.1 km2 and a population of 1,380,000 people. The city has 9 administrative units including 2 districts, 3 towns and 4 districts. The city has 131 commune-level administrative units with 73 communes, 51 wards and 7 towns (decreasing 22 communes and increasing 12 wards).

The city’s 9 administrative units include:

– Phu Xuan District (Northern District of Huong River), has 127km2 of natural area, population size is 229,649 people with 13 wards.

– Thuan Hoa District (Southern District of Huong River), has 139.41km2 of natural area, population size is 313,800 people with 19 wards.

– Huong Tra town has 392.57km2 of natural area, population size is 79,843 people with 9 commune-level administrative units, including 6 wards and 3 communes.

– Huong Thuy town has 427.48km2 of natural area, population size is 107,468 people with 8 commune-level administrative units, including 7 wards and 1 commune.

– Phong Dien Town, has 945.66km2 of natural area, population size is 121,554 people with 12 commune-level administrative units, including 6 wards and 6 communes.

– Phu Loc district has 1,368.23km2 of natural area, population size is 213,803 people with 27 commune-level administrative units, including 23 communes and 4 towns (Lang Co, Phu Loc, Loc Son and Khe Tre).

– Phu Vang district, has 235.31km2 of natural area, population size is 151,842 people with 14 commune-level administrative units, including 13 communes and 1 town.

– Quang Dien district, has 162.89km2 of natural area, population size is 108,094 people with 11 commune-level administrative units, including 10 communes and 01 town.

– A Luoi district, has 1,148.49km2 of natural area, population size is 54,436 people with 18 commune-level administrative units, including 17 communes and 01 town.

Thus, Phu Xuan and Thuan Hoa districts will be separated from the old Hue city, Phong Dien district will become Phong Dien town, Nam Dong district will be merged into Phu Loc district.

Thua Thien Hue province, after becoming a centrally run city with the new name “Hue city”, still has 9 affiliated administrative units (district level).

Previously, the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province spent 1 month collecting people’s opinions on the model plan to establish a centrally run city, with up to 87.1% of people (out of a total of 30,000 votes). chose the name “Hue city” when the province became a centrally run city. This is also a name supported by researchers and scholars, who believe that naming it “Hue city” is pervasive and favorable in the branding process.

Decision 1745/QD-TTg approving Thua Thien Hue Provincial Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 has just been approved. Accordingly, by 2025, Thua Thien Hue will become a centrally run city; By 2030, it will be a typical heritage urban area of ​​Vietnam; one of the largest and unique centers in Southeast Asia for culture, tourism and specialized medical care; one of the country’s major centers for science and technology, multi-disciplinary, multi-field, high-quality education and training; Strong marine economic center of the country; National defense and security are firmly guaranteed; People’s material and spiritual life reached a high level.
