Around 8:00 p.m. on April 22, 3-year-old TKM in the city. Thai Nguyen’s family brought him to the emergency room at Thai Nguyen Hospital A in the condition of having a foreign object, a sharp meat skewer, piercing his tongue.

Baby TKM, 3 years old, in the city. Thai Nguyen’s family brought him to the emergency room at Thai Nguyen Hospital A in the condition of having a foreign object, a sharp meat skewer, piercing his tongue.

The patient’s family said: The child was playing with a skewer and fell, causing the stick to pierce his tongue, causing injury. When admitted to the hospital, the baby was still conscious, the skewer pierced his tongue and stuck into the floor of his mouth, causing bleeding.

Immediately after reception, the patient was treated by doctors from the Department of Dentistry, Hospital A, Thai Nguyen to remove the foreign object and stop the bleeding from the wound; At the same time, examine to make sure that there are no fragments or splinters of the skewer left in the patient’s tongue area. After returning home, the family needs to monitor the wound and clean the child daily according to the doctor’s instructions.

According to BSCKI. Pham The Hung, Head of the Department of Dentistry, Hospital A Thai Nguyen, who directly handled the case: “This case is fortunate that the skewer did not penetrate the blood vessels and nerves in the tongue. Therefore, the baby does not bleed massively, and the wound on the tongue after healing does not affect the baby’s taste buds or ability to speak and pronounce. This is just one of many cases of children injured due to daily life accidents that the hospital receives. The most common accidents are injuries due to falls, cutting and stabbing accidents due to sharp objects (knives, scissors, chopsticks, sticks…), accidents due to burns, choking…”.

Through this case, Dr. Hung recommends that children being stabbed in the mouth by sharp objects such as chopsticks, toothpicks, sticks, pens, etc. and having to be hospitalized in the emergency room happen very often. Children often get stuck in their mouths and throats with chopsticks and toothpicks while eating, especially when eating and playing, which is extremely dangerous. Therefore, parents need to pay careful attention when taking care of children, closely when children play, especially do not let children play while holding sharp objects to avoid unfortunate injuries that may occur. In the unfortunate case of being stabbed by a foreign object, parents must stay calm, do not arbitrarily pull out the foreign object, but try to keep the foreign object in place and take the baby to the hospital so that qualified doctors can handle it as best as possible. as quickly as possible./.
