On the afternoon of April 24, in the area Van Ho district, Son La had widespread hail. Hail covered the ground, the road, and even the entire hills and fields.

Ms. Thu Thuy in Van Ho district said she had never seen such dense hail.

“Stones the size of a finger rain down over a long period of time, causing huge damage to crops, especially plums that are preparing for harvest” – Ms. Thuy said.

“The hail storm lasted about 1 hour. Currently, the hail has subsided but it is still raining. Currently, the commune does not have specific statistics, but we assess that the damage is very large, many houses have punctured roofs, especially flowers. Cinnamon, peach, plum, short-term trees… are damaged” – leader of Long Luong commune quickly informed.

Currently, Van Ho district is focusing on overcoming the consequences and calculating damage caused by hail.

This afternoon, at Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Lao Cai also recorded hail.

In Hoa Binh, VNA quoted information from the People’s Committee of Mai Chau district as saying that hail occurred in the two communes of Hang Kia and Pa Co at about 4:00 p.m. and lasted about 20 minutes. Hail covered many hills, fields, and villages of the two communes.

The stone particles are 1 – 2 cm in diameter. After falling, the water swept thickly on both sides of Highway 6 and covered the hillsides and fields. Many areas planted with mustard, plums, peaches… in Pa Co commune were hit by hail, causing the fruits to fall and be crushed. The roofs of some households in Pa Co and Hang Kia communes were punctured.

This is the largest hailstorm ever in Mai Chau district. Hail causes damage to many crops, trees and many houses.

Mai Chau District People’s Committee is conducting statistics on damage to crops and people’s houses.

In Lao Cai, according to authorities, hail was recorded in some localities of Van Ban district. Especially in Khanh Yen Trung, Khanh Yen Thuong communes and Van Ban town, there were two hail storms lasting from 6:30 p.m. – 6:35 p.m. and 6:38 p.m. – 6:48 p.m. with dense intensity. Hailstones are 2-3cm in size, some are as big as chicken eggs.

Currently, there are no specific statistics on damage. Initially, it was noted that some areas of trees, crops and people’s houses were affected.

Warning of thunderstorms and hail overnight

The meteorological agency forecasts that on the evening and night of April 24, in the Northern region, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An there will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally there will be heavy rain with rainfall from 15 – 30mm, in some places over 50mm. .

During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail and strong winds. Localized heavy rain has the potential to cause flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on slopes and flooding in low-lying areas.
