On the afternoon of April 24, Dr. Trinh Viet Hung, Alternate Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee chaired a conference reporting preliminary results of the archaeological excavation of the Stone Roof site. Nguom in Than Sa commune, Vo Nhai district. Attending the conference were leaders of the Institute of Archeology; Vietnam Archaeological Association; scientists and representatives of relevant departments, branches, units and localities of the province.

Report on the excavation work of Nguom stone roof
The Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee hopes that scientists will continue to accompany Thai Nguyen in completing the application for recognition as a special National Monument.

The archaeological site of Nguom Stone Roof has been excavated five times. Recent excavations have continued to discover the existence of earlier cultural layers. Specifically, through excavations, animal and mollusc remains have been discovered. Evidence shows that ancient residents at Nguom stone roof knew how to use fire, which may be the earliest evidence of fire use recorded in cave and stone roof relics in Vietnam. Along with that, ground bone tools used in early cultural layers show that these are also the earliest dated tools on record.

Scientists have also discovered plant relics and stone relics, showing that this is also the only place of the stone-roof cave relic where evidence of the process of manufacturing and using has been discovered. earliest stone tools in the entire territory of Vietnam. Excavation results in 2024 also show that the thickness of the cultural layer at Nguom stone cheek reaches over 5 meters.

Concluding the conference, Dr. Trinh Viet Hung, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee emphasized his appreciation for the enthusiasm of scientists. He hopes that scientists will continue to research and search for new content to have more convincing evidence about the value of Nguom stone roofs; assign the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to develop a dossier to submit to competent authorities to recognize the Nguom stone roof as a special national monument; Vo Nhai district supplemented archaeological zone planning to preserve and promote the value of Nguom stone roofs, on the basis of affirming that Thai Nguyen province will provide maximum support to the research team. He hopes that scientists will continue to accompany Thai Nguyen in completing the application for recognition as a special National Monument and spreading the world-class value of the Nguom Stone Roof relic. ./.
