In front of the generals of the armed forces, the Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee acknowledged that in the history of the struggle to build and defend the country, the Dien Bien Phu victory on May 7, 1954 and the event on April 30, 1975 are two brilliant milestone. Not only did they mark the end of the nation’s two resistance wars, these milestones also had an international dimension, having a profound impact on the struggle movements of many countries around the world.

“The further time passes, the brighter, bigger, and deeper the historical value and meaning becomes, and the more it proves the resilient will of the unshakable strength of great solidarity of the Vietnamese people.” , Secretary Nguyen Van Nen shared.

The head of the city’s Party Committee said that the two wars have ended, but memories still remain and many scientists and researchers have not yet deciphered all the problems. They questioned why Vietnam overcame such a fierce war, an unimaginable war.

“General Vo Nguyen Giap, who never went through the world’s famous military school, became a legendary general. Many soldiers from the US came here, going to the countryside to come into contact with the hero pilot Nguyen Van. Seven”, Mr. Nguyen Van Nen recounted.

“He said he would like to retire at the age of 55 because people who know how to fly a plane know how to take off, land, and land like that. Secretary Nguyen Van Nen cited that in a book about World War II, he read a story worth pondering. After the end of the war, a man asked a politician when the war might happen. The politician responded, when successive generations no longer understood anything about the previous fierce wars.

“We learn, understand and review to overcome and engrave the memories and noble contributions of the previous generation. But we also act so as not to affect peace, independence, freedom and blood and bones”, Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City commented.

Secretary of Ho Chi Minh City emphasized that with that spirit, the Party Committee, government and people of the city have focused recently on both recovering and developing, implementing the Party’s policies and guidelines. Colonel, Hero of the People’s Armed Forces Nguyen Van Bay, also known as Bay A, was born in 1936 in Hoa Thanh commune, Lai Vung district, Dong Thap province. He passed away on September 22, 2019.

He was one of 19 Vietnamese pilots who achieved the ACES level (the level of shooting down 5 or more enemy aircraft) during the resistance war against the US.

During the resistance war against the US, heroic pilot Nguyen Van Bay was on the staff of the 923rd Fighter Air Regiment (codename Doan Yen The) and participated in the first battle in the airspace of Bac Son – Chi Lang.

During the years 1966 – 1967, hero Nguyen Van Bay piloted the MiG 17 on 94 sorties, opened fire 13 times and shot down 7 American planes.

In 1967, he was honored as Hero of the Vietnamese People’s Armed Forces.
