The Ba Lich boat lock sluice gate is closed until mid-May to prevent saltwater intrusion and ensure safe water supply for production and people’s daily life.
Mr. Le Huu Toan, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kien Giang province, said that the unit has operated the Ba Lich sluice gate on Ong Hien Ta Nien canal (in Vinh Hoa Phu commune, Chau Thanh district) from the 23rd. /4. It is expected that the sewer closure will last until May 15. Depending on the actual situation, the Ba Lich sluice gate will be operated flexibly to control salinity and store fresh water. The Ba Lich culvert, invested in and built by Kien Giang province, has just been completed and promptly put into operation during the peak of the dry season in 2024.
According to the forecast of the Kien Giang Provincial Hydro-Meteorological Station, in late April and early May there will be increased salinity intrusion and deep penetration into estuaries in the province. Therefore, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Kien Giang province has a plan to close the Ba Lich culvert to ensure water supply safety for production and people’s daily life, especially in Rach Gia City and neighboring districts. .
Previously, the Inland Waterways Department Region III had announced to restrict waterway traffic flow in the Ba Lich boat lock sluice area on Ong Hien Ta Nien canal during the sluice operation period from April 23 to May 15. The level of restriction is to completely close the sluice gate, water vehicles can only circulate through the sluice through the lock gate. In the Vam Ba Lich culvert area, there is an inland waterway signaling system and forces to regulate, control, and guide to ensure water traffic safety.
