On the evening of April 24, Central Highlands General Hospital said that the unit had just successfully performed surgery to remove a giant thyroid goiter for female patient NTY (64 years old) in CuM’Lan commune, Ea Sup district.

20 years ago, patient Y discovered a tumor in his neck but did not go to the doctor and did not receive treatment. Nearly a year ago, patient Y saw that the tumor was getting bigger and bigger, so he went to many doctors and was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and a large goiter based on cardiovascular disease.

After that, patient Y was prescribed continuous medical hyperthyroidism treatment. Recently, due to difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing, especially when lying down, patient Y went to Central Highlands General Hospital for examination and paraclinical tests.

As a result of a CT scan of the neck, doctors discovered that the patient had a large left lobe thyroid tumor with a size of about 200x250mm. The tumor has deformed the neck, displaced surrounding anatomical structures, and pushed the trachea to the right.

In this situation, the patient is prescribed surgery to remove the entire thyroid gland containing this tumor. The surgery lasted about more than 3 hours. Doctors successfully removed the tumor from the patient’s body.

According to Central Highlands General Hospital, cases of thyroid goiter that are left for a long time will have extremely dangerous complications. Initially, the tumor may not be toxic, but over time it will lead to a toxic tumor. In some cases, the tumor becomes cancerous or the tumor becomes larger, causing difficulty in breathing, eating, swallowing, etc.

Therefore, when a neck tumor is detected, the patient should go to a hospital with an oncology department for diagnosis and early management and treatment. This is to avoid the case of the tumor being too large and penetrating deep into the chest, causing dangerous complications such as compression of the trachea, esophagus, nerve blood vessels, cancer…
