Mil.in.ua page quoted a video of a Telegram channel close to the Kiev Armed Forces posted on April 22 showing that Ukrainian reconnaissance drones (UAVs) discovered the Russian army deployed 2S4 Tyulpan self-propelled mortars. on the outskirts of the city of Lysychansk. The Ukrainian side then used high-precision bullets to attack enemy equipment. The attack detonated the ammunition on the self-propelled mortar, causing the weapon to burn.
Some military experts working for Mil.in.ua said that the weapon used by the Ukrainian side in the video above could be a missile launched from a HIMARS rocket artillery transferred by the US.
2S4 Tyulpan (Tulip) was designed and developed by the Soviet Union in the late 1960s. After some modifications, this weapon was officially put into service by the Soviet army in 1972. Up to now, about 590 one was built.
According to Military Today, the 2S4 weighs 27.5 tons, with a length of 8.5 meters including the barrel; width 3.2m; height 3.2m. The vehicle is equipped with a V-59 diesel engine with a capacity of 520 horsepower. Thanks to that, the 2S4’s maximum travel speed on flat terrain can be up to 62 km/h, with an operating range of up to 500km. The vehicle’s combat crew has 5 people.
On the chassis of the 2S4 is installed an M240 mortar with a barrel length of 5.34m. The M240’s firing range with conventional mortar shells is about 7-9km, and 17-19km with increased range. The 2S4’s barrel angle elevation ability ranges from 50 to 80 degrees.
