Quynh Bang commune, Quynh Luu district, has 168 hectares of shrimp ponds. By April 20, farmers had harvested 50% of the main crop shrimp area. Recently, up to 90% of new-crop farmed shrimp are stocked from 7 to 20 days old. The farmer said that for nearly a week, shrimp began to float lazily on the water surface, decreased their appetite and died en masse at the bottom of the pond. Many shrimp ponds have an area of 500 – 1,000 m22 Some farmed shrimp died of unknown cause after 1-2 months. People were forced to drain the pond, dry the bottom, then sprinkle lime powder to avoid environmental pollution. Many ponds and lagoons in the area are vacant, waiting for stable weather to stock new breeds. For each hectare of shrimp, the pond owner must invest about 100 million VND to buy seeds, pond treatment materials and food. With this situation, shrimp farmers in the commune lose tens to hundreds of millions of dong per household.

In addition to Quynh Bang commune, shrimp ponds in Quynh Luong, Quynh Thanh, Quynh Yen communes… also have a death rate of over 50%. The government has sent professional staff to instruct people on how to handle and clean ponds and lagoons to release new shrimp seeds after 3-4 months.

Receiving information that shrimp died en masse, the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine of Nghe An province took samples and sent them to the veterinary agency of Region III to analyze and find out the cause. The results of sampling dead shrimp showed no symptoms of white spot disease and hepatopancreatic necrosis. Experts suspect the shrimp died due to acute hepatopancreatic syndrome due to erratic weather and sudden changes in temperature during the day.

At the same time, the authorities also advise When the new season begins, farmers need to buy quality shrimp seeds and have quarantine from the veterinary agency. During the farming process, you need to pay attention to water sources and monitor weather developments to adjust care regimen. When the weather is hot, you need to increase fanning to increase the amount of oxygen in the pond.

It is known that the entire Quynh Luu district has 465 hectares of shrimp ponds, owned by more than 400 households. Each household raises from 500 m2 to more than 2 hectares. Currently, about 20 hectares have dead shrimp, mainly in Quynh Bang commune. In some other communes such as Quynh Luong, Quynh Thanh, Quynh Yen… the death rate of shrimp is less.
