Vietnamese sports change to approach the Olympic arena: Socialize sports to widen the path for development

Looking for role models

T&T table tennis “goes” slower, but by 2023, two players Dinh Anh Hoang and Tran Mai Ngoc of this private club won the men’s and women’s doubles gold medal at SEA Games 32, along with many domestic titles. . Famous manager Do Quang Hien in the football world declared: With table tennis, Vietnamese sports have a greater chance of reaching the top than football.

T&T’s multi-sport club model is the pinnacle of the sports socialization strategy. This means that social resources not only contribute to sports through sponsorship and financial support, but also directly invest and “replace” the work of the sports industry from training to talent coaching. That is the hinge to form a professional sports platform. However, clubs like T&T can only be counted on the fingers of one hand.

The reason why socialization cannot go quickly and thoroughly is that investing in sports is too expensive. T&T Club built table tennis from scratch, had to continuously pour money to bring former famous players such as Vu Manh Cuong and Dang Thanh to work professionally, attract national players with high salaries, but also had to It took more than a decade to get results.

During that time, T&T almost did not receive any specific benefits. Fortunately, they had great success in football so they had enough perseverance to “raise” table tennis. Having said that, the core of the sports socialization strategy is still the mechanism to attract resources, because in reality, we have no shortage of businesses that are passionate and successful in sports like T&T Group. , Binh Dien Fertilizer Joint Stock Company, Thai Son Nam Group, Industrial and Commercial Bank…

The Government issued Decree No. 59/2014/ND-CP dated June 16, 2014 on policies to encourage socialization of activities in the fields of education, vocational training, health, culture, and sports. sports, environment. The promulgation and innovation of mechanisms and policies to mobilize investment resources to develop the field of physical education and sports have created a legal corridor as well as favorable conditions for sports activities. Sports businesses develop.

“Vietnam’s sports economy still faces many barriers, the biggest bottleneck is mechanisms and policies related to facilities. If professional clubs do not have their own stadium or facilities that are not good enough, they will never be able to develop their sports business, because the revenue from the stadium is huge. Currently, we do not have a policy to hand over stadiums to clubs so that they can be proactive in business and create more revenue,” Director of the Department of Sports and Sports, Dang Ha Viet, worried.

New development direction

In the new development orientation, the Department of Sports and Physical Training (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) has worked with many units and businesses across the country to create links with sports federations and associations to create funding sources together. The industry participates in training talented athletes, in a context where the industry’s funding has been continuously cut in the past few years. In addition, the sports industry also encourages individuals and units outside the industry to invest in training talented athletes and go to international competitions to improve professional achievements. This is also the development trend that sports in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore… have implemented and achieved positive results.

However, we must recognize the reality that the path to reaching the Olympics is completely different from the socialization of the movement, requiring a focused and weak socialization method and model. policy factors more clearly. We are talking about investing hundreds or even thousands of billions of dong over a period of up to ten consecutive years while no one can guarantee the results. Even though social resources are very large, they cannot be spread out widely. Every business investing in a sport, or a group of talented athletes, is already under heavy financial pressure. Therefore, it is not possible to socialize on a large scale, but there needs to be a specific plan before inviting businesses to participate in sharing the budget burden.

In fact, at the recent SEA Games 32, the proportion of participating subjects according to socialization sources was less than 10%. Meanwhile, after more than 20 years of developing professional football, Vietnamese football is only approaching the top 10 in Asia but has also come with a lot of losses with dozens of businesses and thousands of billions of ineffective investments.

Besides, it is necessary to exploit socialization resources more effectively, especially in the stage of investment in facilities. Vietnam does not have any business that owns large-scale facilities such as stadiums or gymnasiums when the public-private partnership mechanism and business operations still have many obstacles between ministries and localities. . It is impossible to call for socialization in talent training and coaching activities while businesses have to rent facilities to practice.

In short, socialization is the only way for Vietnam’s top sports to have enough resources to reach the Olympic level and the ultimate goal is to professionalize the sports industry, from athletes to investing businesses, everyone can see the benefits. Only by being specific can we boldly commit ourselves to great goals.

“Recently, a number of businesses and units have signed sponsorship contracts for Ho Chi Minh City sports subjects, which is an effort not only of the sport but also of the whole industry in promoting social movements. promote sports, utilize resources to develop sports throughout the city. Ho Chi Minh City has many outstanding athletes, achieving high achievements in domestic and international arenas. But somewhere, we still have inertia. Although the city’s athletes have made common contributions to the country’s sports scene, we still lack resilience. The Department of Culture and Sports of Ho Chi Minh City always hopes that socialization will create a new momentum and new energy for the city’s athletes, because in the new stage of development, socialization will fuel development. of the industry”, Deputy Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports Nguyen Nam Nhan shared.

The sports industry must proactively create financial resources

Speaking during the most recent meeting with the sports and sports industry, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung emphasized the importance of socialization resources for high-performance sports. Therefore, creating resources for high-performance sports from three sources (Central budget, local budget and socialization) is urgent. In particular, the source of socialization is understood as funding from individuals, athletes’ families, organizations, businesses, associations, sports federations…

That means, disciplines cannot rely forever on the budget and consider it the only solution to develop high-performance sports. Not only football, table tennis, volleyball, golf… but many other sports can also mobilize funds from society to invest in athletes.

In recent years, funding for training and international competitions has been focused by a number of disciplines under the Department of Sports and Sports on a number of key athletes to compete for medals at the Asiad as well as to win official spots to participate in the Olympics, but However, the effectiveness is still low compared to some other sports in Southeast Asia. Spending money on the (already tight) budget for the SEA Games arena with a large number of athletes, even though many sports are not part of the official Olympic competition system, also affects investment in talented athletes. to Asiad or Olympics.

Therefore, in addition to increasing the budget for sports, the sports industry (mainly the sports subjects) needs to proactively approach and attract socialization resources as well as make money from sports economic activities. sports to solve the problem of training, coaching and international competition. If we only rely on the budget that the sports industry is granted, which is more than 800 billion VND per year from the State, it will be difficult to reach the continent and the world.
