Vietnam only has 18 months to participate in the semiconductor race

This is the speech of Mr. Truong Gia Binh – Chairman of the Board of Directors of FPT Corporation at the “Conference on developing human resources for the semiconductor industry”, held on the afternoon of April 24, 2024. Chairperson FPT believes that Vietnam is facing a great opportunity to join the semiconductor industry. However, time is quite rushed.

Mr. Binh shared the story of his recent meeting with ambassadors from the United States, Japan and Singapore.

Chairperson FPT Truong Gia Binh

“An ambassador told me: You don’t know how great your country’s opportunities are. But you only have 18 months. They also didn’t explain to me why” – shared by Mr. Binh.

There are two issues: One, what is the opportunity? And two, what is the deadline? Mr. Binh said, the opportunity is semiconductor, national and ethnic industry. But Vietnam will only have 18 months because no country is waiting for us.

“Then the world will have to choose another path if we cannot respond quickly. At any cost, the world cannot lack chips” – he continued to share.

“During COVID, how much suffering has the world suffered? America’s leading auto company produces unsold products. The American Semiconductor Association goes to countries to promote, make lists, build and now spend tons of money to be able to produce, so as not to be afraid of supply chain disruption. The same goes for the Japanese government and other countries.”

“I very much support the Prime Minister’s approach. That’s the only way that might work. We must calculate the 18-month period by approaching and breaking through. I agree with Minister Nguyen Chi Dung’s approach that we look at the problem as very big, not doing small things.”

Mr. Binh quoted Mr. Jensen Huang – CEO of NVIDIA when coming to Vietnam: Vietnam is the only country that can fully participate in all stages of the semiconductor chain. Therefore, he believes that “a breakthrough is important”. There must be an institutional breakthrough. In 18 months, we must show: Vietnam not only has the opportunity but is also committed to that opportunity.

“The commitment is like Minister Nguyen Manh Hung said: Vietnam must be a human resource hub. So how to become a human resource hub immediately? The government and 7 universities in Taiwan met with the National University, Polytechnic University, University of Technology and FPT to recruit people. Countries are willing to sponsor tuition, airfare, living expenses… everything. And we must satisfy them with as much human resources as possible. Because they said: 1 million people short. We need to prove that Vietnam has students willing to study.”
