National Highways 1, 22, 50 and 1K, sections passing through the city, are considered to be renamed after former Party and State leaders Do Muoi, Le Duc Anh, Le Kha Phieu, and Phan Van Khai.

The plan to rename 4 roads is being sent to relevant districts by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Culture and Sports to get people’s opinions for unanimous implementation.

Accordingly, Highway 1 through the city has three sections proposed to be renamed: Section one is 21 km long, from Thu Duc intersection (old Tram Two intersection) to An Suong intersection expected to be named Do Muoi. The second section from An Suong to An Lac, more than 14 km long, is expected to be named Le Duc Anh. The third section from An Lac to Long An province border is 9.4 km long and is proposed to be named Le Kha Phieu.

Highway 22 also has two sections that are proposed to be renamed. In particular, the first section from the intersection of Highway 1 to An Ha bridge, 10 km long, is expected to be named Le Quang Dao. The second section from An Ha bridge to the border with Tay Ninh province, about 20 km long, is expected to be renamed Phan Van Khai.

Highway 50 is proposed to be named Van Tien Dung for the nearly 11 km long section, from Nhi Thien Duong bridge to the border with Long An province. Finally, National Highway 1K, a section about 1.8 km long from the National Highway 1 intersection to the border with Binh Duong province, is expected to be named Hoang Cam.

Currently, the above four national highways are all vital traffic arteries at gateways into and out of the city. According to the Department of Culture and Sports, naming the leaders of the Party, State, and commander of the Ho Chi Minh campaign for national highways is a meaningful activity to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the country’s unification next year ( 1975-2025).

Former General Secretary Do Muoi (1917-2018) was born Nguyen Duy Cong, from Thanh Tri district, Ha Dong province, now Thanh Tri district, Hanoi. He joined the revolution at the age of 19, served as a member of the Politburo, Deputy Prime Minister… During the period June 1991-December 1997, he held the position of General Secretary. His successor in the period 1997-2001 was former General Secretary Le Kha Phieu (1931-2020). He is from Dong Son district, Thanh Hoa province.

The names of other historical figures expected to name four sections of the national highway are also State leaders who have made many contributions to the nation’s revolutionary cause, including: former President Le Duc Anh, former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, former Chairman of the National Assembly Le Quang Dao, former Minister of Defense Van Tien Dung, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Cam.
