During today’s regular press conference, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said the fishing ban that China issued in the East Sea not only violates Vietnam’s sovereignty in the Paracel Islands, but also violating Vietnam’s sovereign rights and jurisdiction over the exclusive economic zone determined under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Ms. Hang said that Vietnam’s stance on China’s fishing ban in the East Sea is consistent and has been clearly affirmed over the years.

“Vietnam requests that China respect Vietnam’s sovereignty over the Hoang Sa archipelago, as well as sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction over Vietnam’s waters, without further complicating the situation, contributing and maintain peace, stability and order in the East Sea region,” said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
