(TBTCO) – The US Diplomatic Mission in Vietnam, through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and the People’s Committee of Ca Mau province, on April 25 launched a project to support people with disabilities worth 1.2 million USD. USAID funding is deployed in the province.

This support was first announced during US President Joseph Biden’s visit to Vietnam in September 2023. Accordingly, the United States will expand the program to support people with disabilities to two new provinces, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau, bringing the total number of provinces receiving support to 10 provinces.

USAID Vietnam Director Aler Grubbs said: “For many years, the US Government, through USAID, has focused our activities to support people with disabilities in eight provinces that were heavily sprayed with Agent Orange in Central and Southern Vietnam.

Currently, at the request of the Vietnamese Government to expand the program to support people with disabilities, we are starting activities to support people with disabilities in the Mekong Delta with a project launched in Bac Ninh. Lieu last March and the project launched today is in Ca Mau.”

The project implemented by USAID in Ca Mau is called “Supporting the implementation and coordination of policies and rights of people with disabilities”. With a budget of 1.2 million USD, this project will support the implementation of the Law People with disabilities, improving early detection of disabilities in young children as well as expanding rehabilitation services and livelihood support for people with disabilities in Ca Mau province.

The project will be implemented by USAID’s long-time partner, the Vietnam Assistance Association for the Handicapped (VNAH), until October 2025. The project will provide direct support to more than 700 people with disabilities in the province, while also training nearly 300 local service providers, including 30 rehabilitation experts, with the goal of aims to improve the quality of care for people with disabilities.

USAID has helped improve the quality of life for people with disabilities in Vietnam since 1991. To date, the US Government, through USAID, has contributed more than 155 million USD to programs to support people with disabilities in Vietnam. Vietnam.
