Online exhibition “Dien Bien through history through archives”

Attending the online exhibition were Mr. Nguyen Duy Thang, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs; Mr. Le Thanh Do, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Dien Bien province, and representatives of departments, branches and branches of Dien Bien province.

The exhibition is a practical activity to celebrate the 183rd anniversary of the name Dien Bien (1841 – 2024); 115 years of establishment of Dien Bien province (June 28, 1909 – June 28, 2024), 75 years of establishment of Dien Bien Provincial Party Committee (October 10, 1949 – October 10, 2024) and 70th Anniversary of Victory Dien Bien Phu (May 7, 1954 – May 7, 2024).

In the form of an online exhibition, introducing more than 300 documents and images from the National Archives Center, Historical Archives Center and Museum of Dien Bien Province, Institute of Sino-Nom Studies, and Archives of the Ministry of National Defense. French Chamber and a number of agencies and units in Dien Bien province. The documents and artifacts at the exhibition reflect the history of Dien Bien province from its earliest times to the present, many of which are published for the first time.

The exhibition is arranged in 3 parts. Part 1 has the topic “From the land of the ancient Vietnamese to the name Dien Bien”. Dien Bien is a land where people have lived and inhabited since ancient times. Many archaeological evidence from the Stone Age shows that cavemen were present here very early. Visitors will return to the time before the 19th century, learning about the land of Hung Hoa under the ancient Hung King dynasty and Dien Bien under the Nguyen dynasty.

Part 2 “Dien Bien – Rendezvous of patriotism: Introducing documents about Dien Bien under the French colonial period until the period of Dien Bien Phu – a golden history. Reflecting content related to the French colonial period, from the uprising of the Dien Bien People to “Dien Bien Phu – A golden history”.

Not long after the success of the August Revolution in 1945, the French army returned to open fire and wage war with the determination to rob our country once again, forcing our people to stand up and fight to defend our independence.

At the end of 1953, the resistance war entered its 8th year. Across the battlefields, the Vietnamese army launched fierce counterattacks, forcing the enemy to disperse its response forces. The French Army Command tried to concentrate troops and build the Dien Bien Phu basin into the strongest stronghold in Indochina, in order to attract the main force of the Vietnamese army into the war. Realizing that this was an opportunity to destroy enemy forces, the Vietnam Army Command decided to launch a campaign to attack the Dien Bien Phu base group.

On March 13, 1954, the first shot was fired in the Dien Bien Phu campaign, opening the campaign. After 56 days and nights of arduous fighting, on May 7, 1954, our army was completely victorious. From here, Dien Bien became a shining place, a glorious and heroic epic of the Vietnamese people.

Coming to part 3 “Dien Bien – Journey of innovation”: From Dien Bien Farm to City. Dien Bien Phu. Viewers have the opportunity to look back at the process of establishing Dien Bien Farm until the establishment of City. Dien Bien Phu and up to now the planning and development of Dien Bien province. Many documents and images reflecting the efforts and achievements of the Party Committee, government and people of Dien Bien province will be introduced to the public.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Thang, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, said: 2024 is the year of National Tourism – Dien Bien, this is also a golden time for Dien Bien to introduce and promote its cultural history, as well as the land and people here. Although Dien Bien is a mountainous province with many difficulties and limitations, this online exhibition has made a breakthrough in applying technology to promote the value of archival documents. This is a new, creative way of doing things, consistent with the general trend of society, especially among young people.
