Promote development

Kon Tum, one of the provinces in the Central Highlands region, is focusing on promoting fisheries development. In recent years, the province’s agricultural sector has continued to encourage people to raise high-quality aquatic species and invest in technology in production, propagating and mobilizing farmers to choose quality breeds to improve efficiency and ensure quality. Ensure output quality for products. In general, up to now, aquaculture activities in the province have been relatively stable and achieved some encouraging results.

According to statistics from the Kon Tum Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, it is estimated that by the end of the first quarter of 2024, the aquaculture area in the province will be 955 hectares, an increase of 13.56% (+114 hectares) compared to the same period last year. Seafood output is estimated at 1,499 tons, up 7.3% (+102 tons) over the same period last year. Of which, freshwater aquaculture output was 989 tons, an increase of 7.97% (+73 tons) compared to the previous year. Freshwater fisheries output was 510 tons, an increase of 6.03% (+29 tons) compared to the previous year. Aquatic production during the period increased due to the increase in aquaculture area compared to the previous year, along with increased fishing exploitation of households on irrigation lakes, hydroelectric plants, rivers and streams.

Over the years, expanding fish cage farming has been one of the positive solutions that the agricultural sector has focused on. The whole province currently has 317 aquaculture cages and rafts. Among them, Ia H’Drai district has the largest number of cages with 112 cages, followed by Dak Ha district with 70 cages, Sa Thay district with 45 cages, Kon Plong district with 32 cages, Kon Tum city with 27 cages. , Dak To district has 23 cages, Kon Ray district has 6 cages and Ngoc Hoi district has 2 cages.

Aquatic species mainly raised by people in the province include tilapia, red tilapia, beaded tilapia, and lentil fish. Most households raising fish in cages and rafts have links with businesses and units that purchase and consume products, so it is quite convenient in terms of output, creating many jobs and bringing stable income.

To help people grasp aquaculture knowledge, authorities regularly open training sessions on techniques for caring for and preventing diseases for aquatic products, and how to choose appropriate foods. At the same time, instruct households on effective methods of cleaning fish cages. Clean fish cages every 1-2 months to avoid water pollution and help fish grow and develop.

Deploy multiple solutions

According to the aquaculture development plan associated with exploiting, protecting, regenerating and developing aquatic resources in the period 2022 – 2030 and orientation to 2045 in the province, Kon Tum aims to increase the area by 2025. Aquaculture reaches about 1,500 hectares; total aquatic product output is 10,600 tons, of which aquaculture reaches 8,600 tons, exploited aquatic product output is 2,000 tons; The growth rate of production value of the seafood industry is over 10%/year. By 2030, the total area of aquaculture in the province will reach about 11,500 hectares, of which, the area of small pond and lake aquaculture will reach 1,500 hectares, the area of large water surface aquaculture (irrigation reservoirs, hydropower) will reach about 10,000 hectares, The total number of cages and rafts is about 2,000, with an output of 8,000 tons/year; Total aquatic output is 42,000 tons, of which aquaculture reaches 37,000 tons, exploited aquatic product output is 5,000 tons; The growth rate of production value of the seafood industry is over 10%/year.

To achieve the set goals, in the coming time, the agricultural sector and localities of the province will continue to synchronously deploy solutions to propagate, mobilize, support and encourage organizations and individuals to develop their profession. aquaculture, especially aquatic specialties with high economic value such as: turtles, frogs, eels, eels, king goby, polyscias fruticosa, snakehead, in the direction of industrialization and modernization associated with processing variable. At the same time, continue to develop and replicate the aquaculture model combined with culinary processing to serve tourism in localities with advantageous conditions such as Ia H’Drai district, Kon Tum city, Kon Plong district . In particular, focus on exploitation associated with protection and regeneration of aquatic resources for sustainable development.
