The discussion took place in the context of the European Commission’s (EC) Inspection Team preparing for its 5th inspection on the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. of Vietnam, expected at the end of May, early June. The total number of boats in the province to date is more than 6,000, 1,095 offshore vessels, ranking 11th in the country, and the rate of installation of cruise monitoring has reached 100%. The province has 8 fishing ports (3 type II fishing ports, 5 type III fishing ports), 4 storm shelter anchorages for fishing vessels with a capacity of more than 2,000 ships to serve fishing vessels docking and anchoring to shelter from storms. The province has 28 fishing boat building and repair establishments; There are 80 enterprises processing and exporting seafood. In 2023, the province’s aquaculture production will reach more than 215 thousand tons, of which exploitation output will reach more than 142 thousand tons and aquaculture output is estimated to reach nearly 74 thousand tons. In the first four months of 2024, exploitation and farming output is estimated to reach nearly 69 thousand tons, an increase of more than 100% over the same period.

Fishermen participated in the discussion

After the discussion, the Organizing Committee of the program “Lighting lights at sea with fishermen” will award 200 gifts to fishermen. Each gift includes a battery + light bulb + medicine bag + handbook “Things to know about seafood fishing” + eagle battery combo box + specialized rope roll and voucher worth 1 million VND (total each part worth more than 5 million VND).

The Organizing Committee also awarded 25 scholarships, each worth more than 2 million VND to students from fishermen’s families who overcame difficulties to study well, as well as an additional scholarship worth 10 million VND. Program “Lighting lights at sea with fishermen” organized by the newspaper Ho Chi Minh City Law held from the beginning of 2023. The program is expected to take place in 28 provinces and cities bordering the sea across the country with a total implementation budget of more than 30 billion VND.

Since its launch, one year ago, the program has been held in 11 provinces and cities, including: Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Ninh Thuan, Phu Yen, Quang Tri, Quang Binh, Bac Lieu, Ben Tre. Through 11 provinces and cities, the program directly visited and gave more than 2,000 gifts to fishermen (worth nearly 7 billion VND); free medical examination and medicine for thousands of fishermen.

In addition, the program also organizes legal discussions related to the work of removing IUU yellow tags for Vietnamese seafood; hold an event Respond to fishermen to connect the aspirations of fishermen with the local government.

The program also awarded more than 300 scholarships (worth 800 million VND) and many other valuable gifts such as school supplies, milk, and food for fishermen’s children who overcame difficulties to study well.

The Organizing Committee hopes that with specific and practical activities, the Program will effectively contribute to raising the awareness of law compliance among fishermen when participating in fishing at sea. Thereby, together with the Government, ministries, agencies, units and localities, urgently remove the yellow card for Vietnamese seafood according to the Action Plan issued by the Prime Minister. At the same time, the program also hopes to be a bridge for the social community to join hands to support fishermen to stay at sea with peace of mind, affirming and preserving the sovereignty of the country’s islands and seas.
