On the evening of April 25, Singapore Management University (SMU), one of Singapore’s leading public universities, officially opened a representative office in Vietnam, located in Ho Chi Minh City (referred to as OCHCMC).

Professor Lily Kong, President of SMU, assessed that Vietnam is a fast-growing economy, possessing a young, dynamic labor force, playing an important role in shaping the future of Asia. The above factors motivated SMU to choose Vietnam to open a representative office, Ms. Kong said.

According to Ms. Kong, through OCHCMC, SMU will provide scholarship programs and financial support for Vietnamese people pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies, especially for those who are already doing business or starting a business. Scholarships range in value from 5,000 SGD (93 million VND) to full with monthly allowance, with approval criteria based on the candidate’s academic achievements or family background.

SMU also has many subsidy programs for start-up organizations, up to 50,000 SGD (930 million VND) if the business idea is accepted into the business innovation promotion program of the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship. school. And if the university’s undergraduate and postgraduate students have their own startup projects, SMU also awards many prizes, up to 3,500 SGD (65 million VND).

Brings many benefits to Vietnamese people

OCHCMC will also organize and manage student exchange programs between SMU and Vietnamese universities, while promoting experiential learning activities, in-depth exchanges and training courses for managers and graduates. do. “We aim to create a knowledge center that not only brings many benefits to Vietnamese people but also contributes to the development and prosperity of Vietnam,” Professor Kong confided.

Mr. Jaya Ratnam, Singapore Ambassador to Vietnam, said that human resource development is one of the fundamental pillars of the bilateral relationship between Singapore and Vietnam. More than 21,000 officials and representatives from the Vietnamese government participating in Singapore’s cooperation programs since 1992 are the clearest proof of this.

Application standards

To apply to SMU, at the bachelor’s level, candidates need to have good academic records and an English certificate of IELTS 7.0 or equivalent. Meanwhile, at the master’s and doctoral levels, in addition to bachelor’s transcript scores and IELTS 6.5, candidates need additional GMAT or GRE scores, which are popular competency assessment tests in the US. Self-funded tuition at the school ranges from 44,950 – 47,510 SGD/year depending on the field (837 – 885 million VND).

Currently, of the approximately 13,000 students studying at SMU, there are 60 Vietnamese. The number of Vietnamese students studying at the school has tended to increase in recent years, and to date there are about 500 Vietnamese people who have graduated from SMU. Vietnam is the third destination where SMU has a representative office, after Indonesia (2022) and Thailand (2023), Professor Kong added.
