Facing a higher rated opponent, U23 Vietnam did not appear to be inferior. In the first minutes, they risked rising high to put pressure on Iraq U23’s playing style.

This approach is somewhat effective, making Quan Van Chuan’s goal less dangerous. Not only that, opportunities also came to U23 Vietnam right in this round.

The two most notable shots were the shots in the penalty area by Van Truong and Van Tung that sent the ball over the bar.

On the other side of the front line, Iraq U23 used many situations on both sides of the ball but did not create too many surprises.

In the second half, coach Hoang Anh Tuan’s team continued to have a solid position. They were even surprised when Khuat Van Khang put the ball against the opponent’s crossbar.

But while playing well, a loss of concentration made the whole team pay the price. The defense was confused and allowed Nihad Mohammed to escape. He collided with Quan Van Chuan and fell in the penalty area.

Referee Ko Hyung Jin, after reviewing VAR, gave Iraq U23 a penalty and Ali Jasim took advantage of the opportunity to open the score.

The loss caused U23 Vietnam to face many difficulties. Despite great efforts, U23 Vietnam cannot come up with the best approaches. Most opportunities only come from few fixed situations. Difficulties were compounded in extra time when Manh Hung received a red card after kicking Ali Jasim’s foot.

After that, it was Quan Van Chuan’s turn to be penalized when he collided with Ridha Fadhil in the penalty area, but luckily VAR determined that the Iraqi player was offside.

The score of 1-0 was kept until the end of the match, causing U23 Vietnam to stop in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Iraq U23 will face Japan U23 in the semi-finals.
