On the morning of April 27, U23 Vietnam lost 0-1 to U23 Iraq in the quarterfinals of the 2024 U23 Asian finals. The only goal of the match was scored by Ali Jasim on the penalty spot.

In the previous situation, U23 Vietnam’s defense was confused and allowed Nihad Mohammed to escape to receive the ball close to the 5m50 line. Goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan rushed out and missed the ball, but it hit Nihad.

Referee Ko Hyung Jin, after reviewing VAR, gave Iraq U23 a penalty and Ali Jasim successfully took it even though Quan Van Chuan flew in the right direction.

At the press conference after the match, coach Hoang Anh Tuan said: “Congratulations to Iraq U23 for winning tickets to the semi-finals.

The adventure of U23 Vietnam has stopped here. I am very satisfied with what the players have shown. It’s a pity that the match was decided by an 11m penalty. But that’s football.

In this match, U23 Vietnam showed many different things compared to previous matches. Remember, today’s opponent is U23 Iraq, not U23 Kuwait or U23 Malaysia. With such a strong team, Vietnam U23 players have improved professionally and tactically. I feel happy about that.”

When asked about the situations where VAR blew a penalty against U23 Vietnam, especially Nguyen Manh Hung’s red card, whether it was due to inexperience or not, Mr. Tuan stated his opinion: “The role of VAR is very prominent in the first tournament. Not only U23 Vietnam, many matches and even top teams have had many red cards, yellow cards as well as penalties after the referee checked VAR.

VAR helps to apply football rules more strictly, but there are situations that I think do not deserve a red card. Of course, from my perspective, I cannot say whether the penalty was right or wrong. That is the referee’s job. The match is over, I don’t want to repeat that situation again.”

Head coach of U23 Vietnam affirmed that the whole team always strives for beautiful and fair play. Bad situations that happen are force majeure. This will also be a valuable lesson for young players.
