These days the whole country is looking forward to “70 years of victory at Dien Bien Phu” and the hearts of “Lac’s children and Hong’s children” in all regions are excited with the song: “Liberating Dien Bien, our soldiers march forward.” Come back in the middle of this season when flowers bloom, the Northwest is jubilant…”.

It is right to be excited and excited, because without the “famous Dien Bien Victory in five continents, shaking the earth”, how could the Vietnamese people be independent, free, and enjoy a beautiful life like today? now! Also from that excitement and excitement, I myself have been to Dien Bien a few times, but in the fall days of last August when I was invited by the Vietnam Ethnic Minorities Literature and Arts Association to participate in a field trip. Composing about the Northwest region, at first I was a bit hesitant because of my health, but with the encouragement of fellow writers and artists, I eagerly set out.

“Through the vast Northwest, with high passes and deep streams, our soldiers obeyed the Father’s orders…” Those lyrics brought us and the artists to Son La, Dien Bien and Lai. Chau, the place where the Western advancing armies were marked to “Nine years make a Dien Bien, so the red flower crown becomes the golden history”. When the car was noisily entering the first and second corners of Pha Din pass, the phone suddenly rang:

– Where did our group go? I forgot to mention earlier. When we passed through Thuan Chau, preparing to climb Pha Din Pass, we should visit the place where the rally to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Dien Bien victory (1959) took place. Uncle Ho attended and met and expressed gratitude to the people of the Northwest ethnic groups.

This is truly valuable information about leader Ho Chi Minh – the beloved father of the armed forces. Thank you to my colleague, former Editor-in-Chief of Son La newspaper, for this greeting. Because we didn’t know, we overlooked a sacred red address of the nation, but from now on, we consider that on this trip, our beloved Uncle Ho congratulates and blesses the whole group with good luck and success! Perhaps thanks to that, Pha Din – a zigzag pass of up to 32km, made it seem like we were walking in the clouds, in the mist, in the golden sunshine of the ripe rice season and the endless green of the mountains and hills, enhancing the enchanting whiteness of the mountains. flowering balconies.

Then I suddenly heard the sound of artillery pulling from the National Guard soldiers with their uniforms guarding the 36 arduous roads still filled with smoke from bombs and bullets of the battlefield: “Hello for me, pull my artillery over the pass, shout.” “Come on, let’s pull our artillery over the mountain” and it seemed that in that identical army, there was a glimpse of the Mong ethnic teenager Vu A Dinh, who was of the same age and had similar feats as Mr. Kim Dong. of Cao Bang.

After about 70km beyond Pha Din Pass, the car turned left to take us to Muong Phang. The first image that caught our eyes was the sign: “Dien Bien Phu campaign headquarters telephone switchboard”. This is the headquarters of General Vo Nguyen Giap, a general that even the defeated must respect and praise. Follow the 320m trench, of which 96m is a tunnel as if to listen to the General’s every step to the bunker of Chief of Staff Hoang Van Thai, then to the bunker of military advisor Vi Quoc Thanh, hearing the sound of a pencil circling on the plate. map, heard the sound of deep breathing and issued the command “Strong fight, sure victory” full of power, strength, and decisiveness as if to suffocate the enemy to create a golden national history.

Then I heard that many times, the popular General and his comrades returned to visit the land full of military achievements, where the General and his beloved soldiers “…56 days and nights of digging mountains, sleeping in underground tunnels, pouring rain, squeezed rice, blood mixed with young mud. The courage is not wavering, the will is not worn out…” where he fought wits with a famous colonial civilization in the West, fought wits with a talented general who “had won countless battles” in the French expeditionary army, had an iron bunker, There are reinforced concrete bases, cannons, tanks, aircraft and more than 16,000 soldiers, equipped to the hilt, not to mention the tens of thousands of elite troops waiting at the border. aid. But with the passionate patriotism, deep hatred of the enemy, the General’s strategic talent and the will to “die for the Fatherland” of the barefoot and bareheaded army, the Dien Bien campaign was achieved. a “national monument”.

From the top of Chien Thang mountain, where the general’s bunker is located, looking down at Muong Thanh field, one can imagine “heavenly land”, a land considered the “ancestral land” of the Thai ethnic groups in Southeast Asia. There is a field more than 20km long and 6km wide, with the Nam Rom river flowing through, making the “heavenly land” field become a unique fertile field amidst the rolling mountains and forests.

Muong Thanh rice drinks the water of the Nam Rom River, soaked in alluvium from the Da River and many other rivers and streams so that the rice grains here are famous throughout the South and the North, flying abroad with their delicious, sweet taste. and is a famous specialty of the Northwest region. Muong Thanh rice grains, wild white ban flowers, white ban flowers, Thai girls have always been famous for their beauty and good looks, their dances keep rising in every night, the flickering fire makes the heart flutter, for life to be forever green. fresh…

Muong Thanh field is “charming mountains and water”, but 70 years ago it was a “pan of fire” “ignited” by the French colonialists. But the glory is thanks to the great President Ho Chi Minh, thanks to General Commander-in-Chief Vo Nguyen Giap, the entire people and our entire army gathered their strength and unanimously to help Uncle Ho’s army that day after “56 days and nights of gouging mountains.” sleeping underground” created the Dien Bien victory that shook the world, making Dien Bien Phu today a heroic city, a heroic province and a meeting place for tourists and international friends from near and far!

Perhaps everyone, every group is the same, going to Dien Bien is not just to see the new changes in Dien Bien but mainly to admire and learn about historical relics recording victories. The glorious, heroic battle of a decisive strategic battle, forever overthrowing the French colonial yoke and regaining independence and freedom for the country.

When we arrived at the cemetery gate, our entire group, without telling anyone else, quietly lined up and respectfully bowed before the monument to give thanks to the heroic martyrs. After that, divide into groups to burn incense for the tombstones. I know this is just one of Dien Bien’s martyrs’ cemeteries. The entire cemetery has 800 graves but only 4 tombstones have names, which are heroic martyrs: Be Van Dan, Phan Dinh Giot, To Vinh Dien and Tran Can, the rest are just white stele with a star. .

Leaving the tombstone area, I came to two large walls inside the gate, where the names of nearly 3,000 martyrs who died in Dien Bien were written. Wafting in the incense smoke, our feet step by step following the long lines of yellow names appearing on the black stone floor, our hearts tighten and our eyes turn red!

Among that long line of names, the most numerous were from Nghe An, Thanh Hoa and then Cao Bang. Cao Bang’s hometown, a province at that time that was not yet densely populated, was so far away that it was filled with a battalion that forever remained on Dien Bien land. Your blood has mixed with the blood of the whole country, dyeing the red flag with yellow star of the Fatherland, directly to: “Muong Thanh, Hong Cum, Him Lam / Plum blossoms are white, orange gardens are yellow” , thank you a thousand times!

Adjacent to the cemetery is hill A1. The teak trees that are easily five or sixty years old around the hillside are about to become lush green trees under the sun, as if they are still smiling and welcoming guests every day. After a minute of stopping, we climbed to the top. The strongest impression I had when I reached the top was a hole about 20m deep and about 100m wide, which was the remains of a bomb weighing nearly 1 ton.

According to the memoirs of General Vo Nguyen Giap, the bomb exploded at 8:30 p.m. on May 6, 1954. The explosion blew up a section of hill, creating a large hole in the middle of Dien Bien basin. This was the final decisive blow that ended the 56 days and nights of fighting for this base, paving the way to the center to capture General De Cat alive.

Looking at a border area, a valley full of war trophies, I couldn’t help but feel moved. The Nava Plan, a plan to pacify all three countries of Indochina and southern China, was raised and placed by the superpower brain in a magnificent city in the corner of the Western sky that was buried here.

When standing next to the door of De Cat tunnel, I tried to imagine what it was like when he bent down, holding a piece of white cloth and waving it in front of the line when he was a general known as “invincible”. Then I heard somewhere that there was a time when he and his wife visited Dien Bien in the past, came to greet and “pay his respects” to General Vo Nguyen Giap, what did he think about his life of fighting and fire in this decisive battle? !

Ironically, the opposite of the image of a defeated general is a wedding right after the victory at the Do Cat tunnel between a national guard soldier and a female military doctor, when their cheeks and smiles were still alive. There was a smell of gunpowder, but they hugged each other and gave each other parachutes of war. Perhaps nowhere, nowhere in this world is there such intense love and a unique and rare wedding as in this country. And I wonder if there is any more happiness or romance than this!

From a military base, a “golden” valley in the Nava plan, an expectation of controlling the three Indochina countries of the French colonialists, after 70 years of Dien Bien Phu, the “muong of heaven” – Muong Thanh has now become a heroic city, has been integrating into the process of innovation and integration, gradually rising to become a green, clean, beautiful and magnificent city as King Thieu Tri wished in 1841 in a The trip to this heavenly land has changed the name of this country to Dien Bien, I hope this place is as majestic as the impregnable king’s palace on the Northwest border of the Fatherland!

And let the song “Liberation of Dien Bien” resonate for thousands of generations, shine for thousands of generations and also let that wedding be romantic for thousands of generations.
