Effective monitoring of forest resources in Binh Thuan

--

This is a very practical and meaningful project in the context where the agriculture and rural development sector is applying “digitalization” of forest management and protection; Protect the diversity of the forest ecosystem for a province with a large forest area like Binh Thuan.

Apply digital technology to protect forests more effectively

Currently, Binh Thuan’s forested land area is 342,127.58 hectares/ 794,258.8 hectares of the province’s natural area.

Of which, natural forest area accounts for 296,915.47 hectares, the remaining is planted forest. Forests are evenly distributed in the districts, but the most abundant are still in H. Bac Binh, Ham Thuan Bac, Ham Thuan Nam, Tanh Linh and Tuy Phong.

The province’s natural forest vegetation is quite diverse and rich with nearly 200 plant species, 50 rare wood species remaining in abundance in the forests of Nui Ong Nature Reserve and Ta Kou Nature Reserve in the same row. Dozens of rare species of birds, animals and reptiles have been discovered by the Institute of Tropical Biology for many years in other forests in Binh Thuan.

Innovate monitoring technology to protect forests more effectively

Faced with the important task of protecting forests and protecting the diversity of ecosystems and rare genetic resources, in the context of increasingly lacking human resources for forest protection, Binh Thuan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has advised the People’s Committee The province innovates forest monitoring and protection activities.

Accordingly, the advisory agency chose the project “Application of remote sensing technology, using satellite images to serve the management and monitoring of forest resources” in the area. This is a project that is considered to save money and reduce human resources for the province. Accordingly, to innovate better forest protection technology, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has chosen remote sensing technology, using satellite images to help forest protection agencies quickly and accurately know the current status of forest resources; From there, propose optimal solutions in directing, managing and monitoring changes in forest resources, forest land and effectively preventing forest fires.

According to the evaluation of the results, from 2021, the software system that automatically interprets satellite images will detect deforestation points twice a month and automatically send information and warnings of deforestation to the protection agency. forest.

Reality shows that when the software detects warning points, when verifying in the field, it is basically consistent with the warning content of the software. After more than 2 years of implementation, we can initially evaluate the software’s accuracy in detecting deforestation as good; Meets the requirements of the forest rangers and the specific forest types in Binh Thuan province today.
