Lach Van estuary is one of the 6 largest estuaries in Nghe An province, and is also an important waterway for boats of fishermen in Dien Ngoc, Dien Bich, Dien Thanh, Dien Kim, Dien Van… communes to go out to sea. , marine economic development. Recently, the sedimentation situation at Lach Van estuary is becoming increasingly serious, potentially causing unsafety for vehicles traveling in and out of the creek.

The reason that fishermen believe is that the amount of silt from the Bung River is pushed down in the direction of the Northeast monsoon, creating sand bars that tend to become increasingly narrow, “bottlenecking”, straightening the flow and creek mouth deformation. Fisherman Vu Van Nam (owner of a vessel with a capacity of more than 270 CV, living in Dien Bich commune) said that this situation is not new, but has happened for about 15 years, the sedimentation process is happening faster and faster, causing the seaport to increasingly narrow, making it difficult for vehicles to enter and exit, especially during high and low tides.

“When the tide is high or low, getting in and out of the creek is very difficult. You must have experience and clearly understand the tide’s rise and fall schedule to be able to control the vehicle to go out to sea and dock safely; to avoid being hit by ships. The boat ran aground, leading to the risk of damage,” Mr. Nam shared.

Fisherman Pham Van Tuan (owner of a 250CV boat, living in Dien Bich commune) said that the increasingly narrow seaport and shallow water level make it difficult to go to sea or dock, affecting fishing activities. “With large, high-capacity ships like my ship, entering and exiting the creek mouth is very complicated. If you don’t pay attention, it’s easy to run aground, slowing down the departures of other ships,” he said. Mr. Tuan said.

Faced with the fact that many boats are constantly stranded due to silt deposition and narrowing of the estuary, voters have several times petitioned authorities at all levels to dredge and suck sand to make Lach Van estuary wider and deeper, creating Favorable conditions for ships to enter and exit.

Mr. Nguyen Van Lien (Vice Chairman of Dien Bich Commune People’s Committee) said that over the past 10 years, due to alluvial sedimentation, Lach Van estuary is narrowing, the water is drying up, and many large boats of local fishermen are having to anchor in other creeks such as Cua Lo, Lach Quen, Lach Thoi… This greatly affects the local economy, especially in places that are purely fisherman and have strengths in seafood exploitation. “When boats enter the creek smoothly, seafood consumption happens quickly, leading to the development of fisheries logistics services. When ships have to anchor in other areas, the locality will lose revenue,” Mr. Lien said. nice.

Mr. Lien said that currently Dien Bich commune has more than 130 boats exploiting seafood, of which more than 70 ships have a capacity of 90CV or more. On average, 4-6 ships run aground each year outside Lach Van estuary. If stranded, the repair cost is quite large, from 200 – 500 million VND. Some ship owners have lost everything because after running aground, the ship could not be repaired or used. “The Party Committee and authorities of Dien Bich commune and neighboring communes such as Dien Ngoc, Dien Kim and Dien Chau district People’s Committee have repeatedly commented with Nghe An Provincial People’s Committee to consider and soon dredge the seaport and build embankments to protect the sea. sand and wave barriers to ensure safety for fishing boats going in and out, regardless of the tide,” Mr. Lien informed.

It is known that on December 30, 2022, the People’s Committee of Nghe An province issued Decision 4344 approving the project to develop infrastructure and fisheries logistics service facilities in the province until 2030; Estimated total implementation cost is nearly 2,350 billion VND.

Accordingly, by 2030, 7 fishing ports will be built and upgraded with a total loading and unloading capacity of 154,500 tons/year; 5 storm shelters for fishing vessels. The seven upgraded ports include: Lach Con (Hoang Mai town), Lach Quen (Quynh Luu district), Cua Hoi (Cua Lo town), Lach Van (Dien Chau district), Lach Lo (Cua Lo town), Quynh Nghia (Cua Lo town). Quynh Luu district), Lach Thoi (Quynh Luu district).

The project also invests in dredging estuaries and building sand and wave breakers to limit sand sedimentation to ensure the safety of fishing vessels entering and exiting, regardless of the tide.
