According to the first revelations of the General Statistics Office on the results of the 2023 population living standards survey, last year, the average income per person per month at current prices reached 4.96 million VND, an increase of 6.2 million VND. % compared to 2022.

The average income in urban areas is 6.26 million VND/person/month

The statistical agency assesses that in 2023, Vietnam’s economic situation will face many difficulties due to the decline in global trade and the continued instability of the economic and political situation in the world.

In those unfavorable conditions, the economy and population’s living situation will continue to improve and maintain an increase compared to 2022. However, the average income growth rate in 2023 compared to 2022 will slow down. compared to the growth rate of earnings in 2022 compared to 2021 (11.2%).

The average income in urban areas reached 6.26 million VND/person/month, nearly 1.5 times higher than in rural areas (4.17 million VND).

The richest 20% of the population have an average income of 10.86 million VND/month

In 2023, the Southeast will be the region with the highest per capita income (6.52 million VND). The region with the lowest average income is the Northern Midlands and Mountains (3.44 million VND/person/month).

The group of households with the highest income (the group consisting of 20% of the population with the highest income – group 5) has an average income per person per month of 10.86 million VND, 7.5 times higher than the group of households with the highest income. lowest income (group consisting of 20% of the population with the lowest income – group 1) with an average income of 1.45 million VND/person/month.

Income from wages and salaries holds a high proportion in total income

The income structure is shifting in an increasingly progressive direction. Revenues from wages and salaries still maintain a high proportion in the population’s income, increasing from 51.1% in 2018 and maintaining at over 55% in the years from 2020 to 2023.

On the contrary, the proportion of income from self-employment activities in agriculture, forestry and fishery tends to decrease, from 13.3% in 2018 to 10.2% in 2023.

In 2023, 97.2% of households will live in permanent and semi-permanent houses, with only a small proportion of households living in unstable and simple houses.

The Mekong Delta and the Northern Midlands and Mountains are the two regions with the highest proportion of households living in unstable and simple houses in the country (7.4% and 7.9%, respectively). The average housing area per capita in 2023 will reach 27.8 m2, an increase of 0.6 m2 compared to 2022.

Need more support for difficult and vulnerable people

The General Statistics Office assesses that in 2023, population life reflected in the average income per capita will continue to increase compared to 2022. However, the growth rate will slow down compared to the increase in 2022. as the global economy as well as the Vietnamese economy continues to face many difficulties to overcome the consequences of the pandemic.

Social inequality still exists between urban and rural areas, regions and between low-income and high-income groups.

Therefore, in addition to the results achieved in 2023, in order for people’s lives to continue to improve in 2024, the statistical agency believes that the Government and local authorities at all levels need to continue to implement effectively. results of social security programs and policies; create jobs for workers and have timely support policies for difficult people and weaker people in society.
