In the quarterfinals of the U23 Asia 2024, the U23 Vietnam team suffered an unfortunate defeat 0-1 against U23 Iraq. The only goal of the West Asian team came from Ali Jasim’s penalty kick in the 63rd minute.

Notably, Quan Van Chuan was the one who made the impact that caused the opposing player to fall in the penalty area. Before that, Ho Van Cuong also made a mistake by not following, allowing number 10 on the Iraqi U23 side to rush in and finish.

Speaking after the match, goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan said: “The whole team played quite well in this match. But myself and the central defenders did not coordinate well enough to stop the opponent, leading to a penalty kick. This is an unfortunate situation of personal error.

I think both teams played well, Iraq U23 just played a lot of long balls and we tried to stop it. However, U23 Vietnam made mistakes.”

With this defeat, U23 Vietnam will stop at the U23 Asian finals and no longer have a chance to compete for tickets to the 2024 Olympics.

“I’m really sad, we want to attend the Olympics but we can’t do this,” said Quan Van Chuan.

In the recent match, midfielder Nguyen Manh Hung was disqualified with a red card at the end of the second half for stepping on his opponent’s foot. This is also the second red card that U23 Vietnam has received in this tournament, before that was Ngoc Thang for pulling the opponent’s shirt in the 16m50 area.

These are the lessons that Vietnamese U23 players need to recognize and learn from for upcoming tournaments.
