This afternoon an earthquake occurred in Tuyen Quang province, some people in Yen Bai province could also clearly feel the shaking.

Information from the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Geophysics – Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) said that at 4:16 p.m. 13 seconds this afternoon (April 27), a A magnitude 4 earthquake occurred in Ham Yen district, Tuyen Quang province.

This earthquake occurred at a location with coordinates 22,174 degrees North latitude and 104,883 degrees East longitude. The focal depth is about 10 km. Natural disaster risk level is 0.

Director of the Institute of Geophysics Nguyen Xuan Anh said that an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 is of medium level, does not pose a risk of natural disasters, but is likely to be accompanied by aftershocks. Weak structures can be affected by earthquakes of this magnitude.

The Institute of Geophysics continues to monitor earthquakes in this area, informing authorities and people about earthquake activity to proactively respond.

According to Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, the magnitude of the earthquake is assessed on a moment scale of 1-10 or more. In particular, earthquakes smaller than 4 usually do not cause damage. From September 4 to 4, the ground begins to shake, the shaking is clearly felt and trees can be broken. An average earthquake with a magnitude of 5-5.9 will cause houses to shake, walls or structures to have slight cracks. Most earthquakes that occur in Vietnam are at this level or lower.

From 6 to 6.9 there are strong earthquakes, quite rare in Vietnam. At this time, houses will be damaged, some houses with weak structures may collapse. From 7 or higher are large earthquakes with widespread devastation, destroying most common construction works, with large cracks or subsidence on the ground surface.

On September 8, there was an extremely strong earthquake, which is very rare in the world. This level can destroy everything on the surface, including a mountain, and change the terrain on a large scale…

In recent times, the Institute of Geophysics has maintained a national earthquake monitoring station network, meaning that earthquakes larger than 3.5 magnitude can be recorded.

In recent times, the Institute of Geophysics has maintained a network of national earthquake monitoring stations, meaning that earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 3.5 on the Richter scale can be recorded.

In the first quarter of 2024, the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center recorded 71 earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 2.4 to 4.0 degrees on the moment scale in the territory and waters of Vietnam. Among these, 12 earthquakes with magnitude ≥ 3.5 on the Richter scale have been fully reported on the media according to the Government’s Working Regulations.

Of the 71 earthquakes that occurred in the first quarter, 68 stimulated earthquakes occurred in Kon Plong district, Kon Tum province. All earthquakes occurring in the first 3 months of 2024 are small earthquakes (with a magnitude of less than 5 magnitude).
