Minister of Transport Nguyen Van Thang proposed to fine motorbike riders the same as car riders due to violations and increased accidents related to this vehicle.

At the conference to review traffic safety in the first three months of the year on the morning of April 24, Minister Thang evaluated patrol activities and control of violations by topic, especially violations of alcohol concentration, overloaded vehicles, and driving. Drug-using vehicles… of the police have contributed greatly to reducing traffic accidents, receiving support from the people.

The authorities have done a good job in punishing motorists for violations. But motorcyclists violate a lot, running red lights is quite common but have not been punished. Mr. Thang suggested strengthening control and fines for motorcyclists, because motorbikes are still the main mode of transportation for people, accounting for 80-90% of vehicles on the road.

“If we can improve the behavior of motorcyclists, it will definitely reduce traffic accidents even more in the future,” Mr. Thang said.

Reviewing a number of accidents involving children in Bien Hoa, Binh Duong, Minister Thang said ensuring children’s safety is an important task. The Prime Minister issued Directive 31 on ensuring traffic order and safety related to students, and assigned agencies are responsible for best implementation.

Therefore, the authorities need to strictly handle the act of giving cars to children who are underage and do not have a driver’s license, and coordinate with schools to have appropriate handling measures for traffic violations of students. . Parents must spend time teaching their children knowledge and skills before handing over the car.

Previously, Major General Nguyen Van Trung, Director of the Traffic Police Department, said that 50% of accidents occurring on national highways, from 12:00 to 18:00, accounted for 50%, the driver causing the accident was a male of the same age. 28-55 accounts for 66%. In terms of vehicles involved in accidents, motorbikes and motorbikes account for 41%; Trucks, container trucks, cars, and passenger cars each account for over 10 to 18%.

Mr. Trung also mentioned that the situation of students violating traffic laws is complicated, especially middle and high school students who go to school by electric motorbikes, motorbikes, and motorbikes but do not wear helmets, line up, and drive too fast. speeding, swinging, not obeying traffic lights, using cell phones while driving. Many students drive vehicles without a driver’s license, increasing the risk of accidents.

In the first three months of the year, there were 6,550 traffic accidents nationwide, killing more than 2,700 people and injuring more than 5,200 people. Compared to the same period in 2023, there will be a 22% increase in the number of cases, a 15% decrease in the number of deaths and a 54% increase in the number of injuries. 5 Provinces with the number of deaths increasing by over 50% or more are Ha Giang, Dong Thap, Thua Thien Hue, Lao Cai, and Ca Mau. Traffic police have handled more than one million violations, an increase of 38% over the same period last year, including 22% of alcohol violations and 20% of speeding violations.
