Explaining the hail phenomenon, according to Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, Head of Weather Forecasting Department, National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, in the recent period, temperatures across the country have tended to be higher than the average for many years. . According to statistics, during the 20 days of April, the temperature across the country, especially in the Northern region and central provinces, was often 2-3 degrees Celsius higher than the average for many years, even higher in some places. above 4 degrees Celsius.

With temperatures higher than the average for many years, combined with the impact of weak cold air moving down from the north, interacting with each other has caused hail, lightning tornadoes and strong winds in most areas. across the country, especially on the evening of April 24 in Son La, Lao Cai, Hoa Binh… “This hail phenomenon is much more intense than the average for many years” – Mr. Huong said. good.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Huong, the current phenomenon of thunderstorms, lightning and hail is difficult to predict far away. However, the meteorological agency can early warn of this phenomenon through monitoring devices such as using satellite cloud images and using radar images to warn 30 minutes to 1 hour before the phenomenon occurs.

In the coming time, thunderstorms, lightning and hail will continue to occur in the Northern provinces (April, May and the first half of June) and May in the Central Highlands and Southern regions. Because this is the changing season, thunderstorms, lightning and hail still occur frequently and intensely.

“It is forecasted that in 2024, with temperatures higher than the average for many years, lightning and hail storms are likely to occur much more intensely than the average for many years” – Mr. Huong said.

Widespread heat during the April 30 holiday

Forecasting the weather for the holidays on April 30 and May 1, Mr. Huong said the weather on this occasion is relatively special. According to statistics from the meteorological agency, in the past 10 years, there has never been a year in which all three regions of North, Central and South experienced heat during the holidays of April 30 and May 1.

It is forecasted that from April 27 to April 30, the North will experience a widespread heat wave with temperatures in the Northeast region, including the capital Hanoi, potentially as high as 37-38 degrees Celsius. In the Northwest region as well as the Central provinces from Thanh Hoa to Binh Dinh and Phu Yen, temperatures are likely to be as high as 37-39 degrees Celsius.

In the western mountainous areas of the provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Ngai, temperatures are likely to reach 39-41 degrees Celsius.

In the Central Highlands and Southern regions, holidays also experience hot weather with temperatures in the Central Highlands ranging from 35-37 degrees Celsius; Southern region from 36-38 degrees Celsius.

In addition, in the first days of May, in the Northern region, with a focus on the Northern Midlands mountainous region, there is a possibility of rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.

In the South, there will be seasonal thunderstorms and heat will decrease, but in the Central Highlands and Southern regions, there may be an increase in thunderstorms, lightning and hail in the early part of May when the rain season changes.

The cause of the heat, according to Mr. Huong, is that our country is being affected by the El Nino phenomenon and this phenomenon has made the whole country’s temperature higher than the average for many years.

In addition, during this period, our country’s weather is being affected by the hot low pressure area in the west, so there is a high possibility that it will cause a widespread heat wave across the country during the upcoming holidays of April 30 and May 1. .
