The meeting between the US and Chinese foreign ministers took place in the context of increasing tensions between the superpowers. While Mr. Blinken was on his way to China, the US Congress passed a law banning the social media platform TikTok within one year in the US, if TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance refused to sell its shares.

When the US and Chinese delegations began meeting at the Diaoyu Dai guesthouse in Beijing, Mr. Wang Yi said that the relationship between the two countries was at a turning point.
