“The whole team played quite well, myself and the center back did not coordinate well enough to prevent the opponent and resulted in a penalty. This is an unfortunate situation of personal error,” Quan Van Chuan spoke up after U23 Vietnam’s 0-1 defeat in the quarterfinals of the 2024 U23 Asian Championship.
In a balanced match, U23 Vietnam suddenly faced a disadvantage because of a personal mistake. Watifi escaped to catch a pass from his teammate and fell in the penalty area of U23 Vietnam.
After consulting VAR, the referee determined that goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan committed a foul and decided to award Iraq U23 a penalty kick. On the 11m mark, Ali Jasim successfully finished, scoring the only goal of the match.

The fact that the home team lost by a penalty kick in an unnecessary error situation made many Vietnamese fans feel regretful. Quan Van Chuan himself also bitterly admitted that his mistake caused U23 Vietnam to fail, in a context where the opponent was not too superior. I said:
“I think both teams played well, U23 Iraq only played a lot of long balls and we tried to stop it but U23 Vietnam made mistakes. Actually I’m very sad, we wanted to go to the Olympics but couldn’t achieve it. Okay”.
With this defeat, U23 Vietnam officially missed their goal of winning tickets to the Paris Olympics. Meanwhile, Iraq U23 won tickets to the semi-finals and will face Japan U23.
