In an interview with CNN on November 20, Mr. Barak revealed: “The public has known for many years that Hamas holds in its hands the original shelters created by Israeli builders underneath the hospital.” Al Shifa Institute. Perhaps, four to five decades ago, we helped the Palestinians build these shelters to have more space for hospital operations within the very limited scope of this complex.”
Israel took control of the Gaza Strip from Egypt in 1967 and maintained military occupation of the territory until 2005, when Tel Aviv withdrew its soldiers and Jewish settlers from here. The Islamist movement Hamas took full control of the area two years later.
Mr. Barak believes that Hamas used the bunkers built by the Israelis under the Al Shifa facility as a command post and connected them to a network of underground tunnels hundreds of kilometers long, developed by the group itself.
“Perhaps this is not the only command post. Others are located below other hospitals or in other sensitive places. However, they were certainly used by Hamas in this conflict,” the former Israeli Prime Minister added.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on November 19 released a video showing a tunnel operated by Hamas underneath the Al Shifa facility. According to the IDF, this tunnel is 55m long, 10m deep and equipped with 3m long ladders as well as a 7m long spiral staircase. The Muslim armed group reinforced the tunnel entrance with various defense mechanisms, such as blast doors and battlements, to prevent Jewish soldiers from accessing.
However, both Hamas representatives and doctors working at Al Shifa hospital denied that this armed group had a command post or underground base here.
