A man in China sued his ex-wife to get back 186,000 yuan in dowry money, after she filed for divorce following an abortion, just two months after the wedding.

The wife is said to have used this trick on six other men, local media reported.

Legal Daily said the wife’s name is Shuang (name has been changed), originally from Henan province (China), met her husband Xiaoya at a blind date organized by a matchmaker in March.

Just two months later, the two got married and by July, Shuang was pregnant. However, Shuang decided to have an abortion with a glass because the doctor discovered many unusual problems. Not long after that, she filed for divorce.

Xiaoya agrees to a divorce, but sues Shuang to get her dowry back.

Initially, two courts dismissed Xiaoya’s lawsuit, but when he appealed, he revealed that Shuang had been married to six men. In these marriages, she became pregnant, had an abortion, and then filed for divorce. Xiaoya accused Shuang of using this trick to make money.

Xiaoya found Shuang’s ex-father-in-law to testify that she had married his son, had an abortion and then divorced in just six months. Shuang did not return the dowry received from this family.

After review, the court ruled that Shang returned 100,000 yuan to Xiaoya, arguing that she had no intention of living with him as husband and wife. The judge did not force her to return the entire dowry money, because she was pregnant and had an abortion.

Information about the incident shocked Chinese social media.

“Turning marriage into a money-making tool, it’s terrible,” another person commented.

Dowry disputes often attract attention from Chinese public opinion. In May, a man broke up with his girlfriend because her family demanded too much dowry. According to the man, he agreed to pay 188,000 yuan to his girlfriend’s family, but as the wedding approached, she asked for an additional 30,000 yuan to buy jewelry.

After the breakup, the man traveled widely, claiming that 30,000 yuan was enough for him to visit 40 different cities in 5 months.
