The principal was ‘shocked’ at the situation of the male student who passed into Asia’s top 1 university

--

Bang Ton Vong’s father was mentally ill, his mother was paralyzed since childhood and the family was very poor. Ton Vong took care of his parents almost alone. Even the dilapidated house had to be borrowed from relatives. Others may be embarrassed, but the guy always smiles naturally and appears happy when sharing about his family.

The inspirational story of the poor valedictorian touched many people.

Bang Ton Vong was born in 1999, in Hebei province (China). Even though both parents were sick, the boy was still born healthy. The family poured all their love into their son.

They do not expect their child to achieve many achievements but only hope that Ton Vong grows up healthy and happy. To support the family, his father often went out to do odd jobs to earn money. Even though his grandparents are old, they still have to do farm work and take care of the mother and child.

Coming from such a family background, Ton Vong never felt different from other children. The boy inherited his mother’s optimism and was the joy of the whole family.

When he was 5 years old, even though the stove was high, Ton Vong climbed up on a chair and learned how to chop and stir-fry vegetables under his mother’s guidance. Ton Vong never sleeps late, gets up early every day, boils water and sweeps the house.

However, tragedy still occurred when at the age of 6, while returning home after the rain, Ton Vong felt short of breath and was taken to the hospital for a check-up. The male student was diagnosed with severe congenital heart disease.

Ton Vong’s mother did not know how much it would cost to cure the disease, nor did she know if it would be cured, but she was determined to go door to door in a wheelchair to borrow money. Neighbors supported her and she borrowed 40,000 yuan so her son could go to the city for surgery.

Even though the house has only 4 walls without decorations, it is covered with awards – that is the greatest pride of Mr. Bang’s family.

Fortunately, Ton Vong’s health gradually improved, but to treat this disease, the family had to incur a large debt. His mother even started doing crafts like embroidery to make money. Every day, she worked until midnight while his father was less and less at home.

Ton Vong takes advantage of after-school hours to pick up plastic bottles in the hope of supplementing his family’s income, paying off debt, and saving for his future dream of college.

Not betraying his parents’ gratitude, Ton Vong studied very hard and made progress. Even though the house only has 4 walls and no decent decorations, it is covered with awards – that is the greatest pride of Mr. Bang’s family.

For Ton Vong, the driving force that helps male students continue to move forward and achieve high scores is his mother. The young man wanted to become independent as soon as possible and have a good job so that his mother and family would not have to endure such hardship.

When Bang Ton Vong was in middle school, his mother fell ill and had to be hospitalized. Having to pay a hospital fee of 5,000 yuan, the young man borrowed money from everywhere to treat his mother. Ton Vong worked part-time at a small restaurant near the hospital in his free time and often stayed up all night to study.

Although this family is very poor, it is very warm and everyone has a positive attitude towards life. Because of this, Bang Ton Vong always smiled and said: “I am so lucky to be born in such a family.”

For Bang Ton Vong, the driving force that helps him keep moving forward and achieve high scores is his mother.

In 2017, Bang Ton Vong excelled and was accepted into Tsinghua University with an impressive score of 744 – ranking first in Hebei province. Principal Thanh Hoa visited and personally handed over the admission certificate. However, when he saw the male student’s situation, he was shocked and speechless.

Ton Vong’s father had a mental disorder and only stood far away, looking back. His mother warmly welcomed the principal, but unfortunately, she was in a wheelchair and could not stand up.

Many benefactors offered to sponsor his studies, but Ton Vong refused because he knew it was not easy for others to make money. Furthermore, there are student loans in the university and Ton Vong can also work part-time.

Bang Ton Vong majored in Precision Instruments at Tsinghua University and has now graduated. Unfortunately, his mother passed away from illness in 2020 and was unable to see her son wearing a bachelor’s uniform. This is also the biggest regret in Ton Vong’s life.

The young man is continuing his doctoral studies at Thanh Hoa. His life is brighter than before and the young man is about to marry his long-time girlfriend. Bang Ton Vong’s biggest dream is to become an engineer and contribute at a scientific research facility. He is gradually realizing this wish, not only for himself, but also for his family.
