Argentina’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the country has requested the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to arrest Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi in connection with the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires. Aires left 85 people dead, according to AFP.

Minister Vahidi is a member of the Iranian delegation currently visiting Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and Interpol has issued a red alert for his arrest at the request of Buenos Aires, according to the Argentine Foreign Ministry. Buenos Aires has also asked the Pakistani and Sri Lankan governments to arrest Mr. Vahidi.

“Argentina demands the international arrest of those responsible for the 1994 AMIA attack, which left 85 people dead, and those who still hold their positions with complete impunity. One of them is Mr. Ahmad Vahidi, was considered by the Argentine judge as one of those responsible for the attack against AMIA,” the Argentine Foreign Ministry emphasized.

Iranian Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi spoke at a press conference in Tehran on March 4

There is currently no information on Iran’s reaction to Argentina’s above move.

Previously, on April 12, a court in Argentina held Iran responsible for the 1994 attack on the AMIA Jewish community center and for the bombing two years earlier of the Israeli Embassy that killed 29 people. people died.

So far, no side has claimed responsibility for the 1994 attack, but Argentina and Israel have long suspected Iran-backed Hezbollah forces carried out the attack at Tehran’s request, according to AFP.

Prosecutors have accused top Iranian officials of ordering the attack, although Iran denies any involvement.

The Argentine court also found that Hezbollah was involved and called the attack on AMIA a “crime against humanity”.

Argentina has the largest Jewish community in Latin America, with about 300,000 members. This is also home to a community of immigrants from the Middle East, especially from Syria and Lebanon, according to AFP.
