Mr. Ruan Weng (born in 1930, lives in Beijing, China) has been lonely most of his life because his parents died early, and he has no wife or children.
In 2011, due to being alone, with poor health, and no one to take care of him, he asked the village committee and local government for support but failed. Finally, a villager named Liu Nan decided to help the old man.
The two signed a “Legal Support Agreement”, according to which Liu Nan will take care of Mr. Ruan Weng and take care of and be responsible for the funeral when he passes away. In return, the old man will give him the right to inherit all his assets. In March 2023, Ruan Weng’s nearly 242 square meter house was demolished and he was compensated with 5 resettlement apartments. In October of that year, the old man passed away at the age of 93. Liu Nan bought land in the cemetery and arranged his funeral.
Liu Nan said that during the 12 years, he fulfilled his obligation to support Ruan Weng both while the old man was alive and during his funeral, so he had the right to inherit according to the agreement with the deceased. Faced with the objections of Mr. Ruan Weng’s sister and two nephews, he brought the case to court, asking the court to confirm the will and alimony agreement as well as resolve the property transfer.

Many villagers attended the trial and testified that with Liu Nan’s care, Mr. Ruan Weng’s quality of life was considered above average in the village. The old man’s lungs were not good, he was equipped with 5 oxygen ventilators. The court also determined that Ruan Weng had less contact with relatives after living with Liu Nan, and these relatives also rarely visited the old man.
Finally, the court ordered the five houses to be handed over to Liu Nan because he had taken care of the old man for more than a decade and helped him enjoy his old age.

Some time later, knowing that Liu had to live in difficult conditions, the old man invited him, his wife and three children to live in his house, forming a special family, living together in harmony and happily like blood relatives. .
When Mr. Ma died in 2021, his three younger sisters occupied the house and claimed they were entitled to the entire property. They sued Liu in court, denying the value of the agreement signed between Mr. Ma and Liu in 2020 with the content that Liu was responsible for taking care of the old man until his death and then entitled to all of his assets. Relatives said that the old man suffered from mental illness, Alzheimer’s and did not have enough cognitive capacity to sign that document.
However, the People’s Court of Baoshan District, Shanghai, said that the above agreement was completely valid, requiring the plaintiffs to return the house and all of the old man’s assets to Mr. Liu.
