Russian President Valdimir Putin announced the launch of the third phase of expanding the Baikal-Amur railway (BAM, one of the longest railways in the world) and the Trans-Siberian-Transsib line.

The goal of this phase is to increase capacity for the entire Eastern Railway Network. BAM will be building a second train line, in total it will have to carry out more than 300 infrastructure projects.

According to the President’s directive, in the next 10 years the amount of goods transported through the Eastern Railway Network must increase to 270 million tons a year, increasing Russia’s export and transportation capacity. Thanks to that, Russia can become an important link of the entire Eurasian transportation system.

President Putin recalled that in the early 2000s, BAM helped Russia open new markets in Asia-Pacific, ensuring a stable transport route for the entire Eurasian continent, together with Transsib becoming into a strategic transport corridor of global stature.

He was confident that BAM would allow exploitation of the coal, iron ore, tin, gold, copper, molybdenum, oil and gas mines of Eastern Siberia and the Far East.

Currently, the Russian Railways enterprise (RZD) is implementing the second phase of development of the Eastern Network, including BAM and Transsib, worth 1,100 billion rubles (nearly 12 billion USD).

The project is built until 2024 to increase carrying capacity to 180 million tons from 173 million tons in 2023 and reduce transit time from the Far East to the Western border of the Russian Federation from 8.9 days to 7 days left. The estimated cost for phase three is about 3,700 billion rubles.

The BAM railway in Eastern Siberia and the Far East is Russia’s second main line leading to the Pacific Ocean.

BAM is 4,287km long, includes 280 stations, and is considered a century project of the 20th century. Transsib is a trans-Siberian railway with a length of nearly 9,300km (from Moscow to Vladivostok), the longest in the world, in The European territory accounts for about 19% and the Asian territory accounts for about 81%.

Km number 1778 of Transsib is the border between Europe and Asia./.

The Brightline West system, billed as “the first true high-speed rail system” in the US, will run a 218-mile route between Las Vegas and three stops in California.
